The IEP team wants to discharge Jelani from physical therapy. I disagree and haven't signed anything and rightfully so. Jelani has made great strides this year in gross motor, but he's still quite delayed and has weak trunk control. He's unable to balance himself well enough to stand for any length of time and sometimes almost falls backwards in the shower, he walks with a wide awkward gait and often trips, stumbles, he's unable to climb stairs unassisted, difficulties balancing to pull pants down, and I could go on. But according to the school based therapy, discharge is valid if the child can sufficiently access playground equiptment and negotiate his way around the classroom. So during the IEP meeting when I brought these things up, the team was so adament about his improvement and the assistance he receives with the classroom aides and the group APE., that they are still recommending discharge. I explained my fear of his safety and that direct PT is still needed in my opinion... that even his IEP states he is required to receive maximum assistance at all times when accessing playground equiptment. And they still mentioned his 30 minutes of group APE. Well that's not the same.
They mention how he's being pulled out for PT 30 min. 2x week and how it takes him away from his classroom time. I wanted to just puke, this is more important to me than missing class time, it's his safety and motor abilities that are in need of attention right now.
Then I asked about the 2 months he didn't receive PT and that he's owed compensitory make up time...(they were switching vendors)..they assured me he'll get it.
The team then said that they will provide an independent PT assessment since I wasn't in agreement. But here's where I'm unclear and need your help...the school is saying that the same agency that his current PT is with (the one whose recommending discharge) will be doing the independent assessment! I said that I felt it should be done by an unbiased outside agency(not his current)....then the facillitator said that "oh, they have their own opinions and have been known to disagree". Something doesn't jive about this. I'm wondering if anyone knows about this and can advise me..is this fair? I do plan to seek an advocate through our regional center and all in all I'm hoping this doesn't get ugly.
Thankyou in advance...sorry so loooong.
