Emily. as most of you know, is attending a 4 day a week ARTs program in Austin. She keeps the BEST sketch books...and the fun thing is that she labels all the drawings in her own handwriting..(horrible...LOL) and phonetic spellings. The mentors in the program always get a kick out of seeing her books every day. I love this painting. One of the mentors helped her with it...picking out things from her sketchbook and helping her arrange them on the canvas. This will be auctioned off the 15th at their Building Bridges gala fundraiser. I would LOVE to buy it myself but hope it goes for more than I would ante up...It is soooo Emily and I am happy they are letting her do her own brand of art rather than turning her into a mediocre "sofa size" painter.

I love Naive Art...Primitive Art...whatever you want to call it. I think so often...in good faith...mentors to people with disabilities who have developed their own form of art will often try to change it and urge them to do more realistic work. What you end up with often is what I said above...mediocre sofa size art that looks just like every other wannabe painter. I am sure I could market Em's art quicker than mine...and would except she now sort of belongs to this ARTs program.
I have had to encourage the program to more or less let her do her own thing with support...and I think this shows they are finally letting her do it.

just wow! I really see so much in her work. In this one I see baby birds above the goats or cows(?) in a nest with their mouths wide open for food and they almost look like they have bibs on! This is so good, is that a double decker bus like one she takes? She's amazing!~

Katie called chuckling after dropping her off at art today. I guess along the same lines using pics out of her sketchbooks...there is a huge epic painting coming and it has a "story" to it of sorts. Katie promises to photo it...but its got all sorts of people in it including Elvis in a bear suit? and the girl off the Wendy's cup...as well as her cat and dog with jewelry on sitting at a table full of food???!!!LOL. I can hardly wait.
