about Autism (sp?) Hmmm K, that is a new one, wasn't her son born with DS? Guess McCain needs to be reminded. K, sorry if this does not belong here BUT come on if you like Palin or not she is NO expert on Autism and I for one resent him using this whole thing for votes. McCain wants to freeze all spending Hmmm not good news for our kids Just my thoughts and NO I am not Republican nor Democrat I am an Independent. Not to bring anyone down but the facts are Special Education has always been one of the first things to be cut and that BUGS me. I hope no matter who wins and if Palin/McCain don't or do I sure hope she will do what she says and pull for our kids. Just spouting off BUT honestly I hate to see our kids or any kids with special needs used for votes. I sure hope that is not the case here CC ~

I did think the same thing when I heard McCain say that..... something about " poor families bringing their precious children with autism, something Sarah Palin is an expert on".....and I thought,.....hmm....close....but not really....... this debate was better than the last one, I think.....more time to answer, rebutall ( sp ?) I just found it more intetesting......

I thought McCain made the comment that Sarah Palin would reach out to families of children with special needs, and then Barack Obama mentioned the cost of educational services for those with autism........it was after that point that autism was referred to a few times by McCain. Maybe I misunderstood. I believe that, because of her connection with Ds and with autism, she hopes to be a support to ALL families of children with special needs.........not just those of us with children with Ds. The fact that special education has always been one of the first things to get "cut" is one thing I hope will change with McCain/Palin in the White House. Susan

and yes....like I said on a different post.....I think she sees herself as an advocate for all special needs....not just DS.....I feel the same way......and I bet many here do.....we can relate to all families that have different issues....not just DS because we all face many of the same struggles, health concerns, and seeemingly endless search for support, references and information.

I think like Pat, his reference was too her nephew BUT, I did get taken back by the comment when he first said it.... it was funny.. I was like... Autism? That's it? LOL But, I am really not one to disect all the candidates' words...... I take lots of it at face value. A.

You know I think that whatever Palin's intentions are with mentioning the special needs group, I just know that having a son with DS is and has affected her and will make her be someone who fights for us and our kids. So I am going for her! Jess

Sarah Palin's 13 yr. old nephew has autism. Plus in her extended family, some cousins have asperger syndrome. I also read that many parents of children with ANY disabilities are reaching out to her at her rallies. So maybe thats where John McCain got that idea... Heck, if it will help my kid, or other kids with special needs, I don't care where he gets his ideas....as long as he follows through!

Right after McCain announced his running mate CNN interviewed Sarah Palin's sister. Her son has Autism. The sister pointed out that the family was very close and that they all pitched in to offer help and support with her son. She specifically said that Sarah had been a very big part of her son's life.
Sometimes I'm all happy with Palin and sometimes I'm not. I really don't think it has a thing to do with her. I think it's more a function of me being unsure of where I stand on some issues or what I think I'm hearing come from McCain and Obama.
I have no reason to question the fact that Sarah Palin is a wonderful mother who thinks the world of her children and her husband. She may or may not be the person who should be VP, but I can see myself enjoying a cup of coffee with her. We could talk about everything from having a child in a combat zone to loving a baby with Down syndrome.

I like her and will vote that way. Having someone in a similar situation will bring a lot of attention to children with Down Syndrome. There was a story that almost every stop she has made there are hundreds of people with DS there. I think it is amazing and I can't wait. Char, my husband was wounded in combat. Maybe we can have coffee
