Hi friends! Luke will be 9 on November 19th and I want to know about your experience of Birthday celebrations of your kids with DS. Usually we invite family and celebrate at home, but this time I want to make something special for him, because he is getting older and understand more. Please share your experience!

HOW FUN Alice!!!
You know Russell had never had a "friend" birthday party until this year when he turned 10. His bday was in March but I planned his bday for April, end of April so we could rent a pavillion at an adaptive playground by our house. (ironically it rained that day LOL). I had never invited the kids from his class or other friends, so we invited the whole class and them my friends and their kids. I needed an area where the friends from his class could come and play, since some need adaptive equipment, so the park was a good pick for us!
It was lots of fun..... even with the rain and the cold! ;D

Hi Alice - are you thinking of inviting just relatives or kids from his class?
For the last several years we've had bowling birthday parties for Jason. Most kids like to bowl and with the bumper lanes and the adaptive rollers, most kids can participate. The bowling alleys usually have some kind of birthday party package - pizza, pop and bowling for 1 price. We take in our own cake. One nice thing is no clean up before or afterwards!! LOL

Oh I'm not sure this year yet...and I should hurry up because Jelani's birthday is Nov. 21! I'll come spend it with you guys! We'll share the same cake. We'll just turn the 9 upside down for Jelani when it's his turn to blow candles out! lol He turns 6 this year! I usually just put a candle-style number of his year in the middle of the cake as decoration, then place the correct number of burning candles for him to blow out. He LOVES cake and it was one of his first words. This year I started saving gifts from early in the year, I'd buy something when I saw it and tuck it away. Now he'll have tons to open. Since it's just me and Jelani, I may invite a couple friends from school and some neighbor boys and a couple friends from his baby years. I expect there can be alot of kids if I invite them , about 5 with Ds all his age. The other kids are sweet as can be and already know and love him. I haven't decided if I'll have a party at home or out somewhere. We have a small one bedroom apartment, so it could get pretty cramped with 15 or more people. Jelani says birthday cake and loves opening gifts...infact, this year he's made great strides in disassembling just about anything! He might have a problem sharing his cake though, we'll see. Just as long as he doesn't throw it I'm fine. LOL The theme will be Spongebob (yep-he can't get enough even after his halloween costume!) and I've already bought the plates and balloons. Balloon was one of his first words too...before mommy! He actually speaks all of the characters names too. And we practice talking in sentences using Spongebob as the topic. I say "where is Gary" or "where is Mr. Krabs?" and he's so motivated. Ok I got off the Birthday topic for a sec...but anyway, that's my 2 cents worth!

We've done various things for Emily's birthdays and have invited friends from school some years and other times have just done something special for her on her birthday that we know she loves. We've invited friends to the local swimming pool for a party, bowling (several years for each of those because everyone had so much fun), Chuck E. Cheese, movies, etc. It's too cold for a pool party in November, but I know my kids have been invited to parties where the parents rented an indoor pool at the YMCA or a hotel for a Winter pool party, so that's a possibility too.
