So I hear they have taken all the cold meds for kids under 4 off the shelves. What do you all think about this? I heard they are also considering taking off the meds for kids under 12 next year. In Canada, they took off all the cold meds for kids under 2. You can still buy cold meds for kids 2-11 here. I think its crazy actually. They say its cause of parents overdosing their kids, and how there isnt enough evidence that it even works. Ya right. It works, cause I give it to Cassie, and my doctor knows. She is 19 months now. I buy Tylenol Cold med, and give it to her by weight. Any comments on this?

Just one comment. Go herbal. Find a good one who knows what they are doing. Check with your doctor first ( of course).

My pediatrician does dosing based upon the weight of the child, not age. I think some of the medications work just fine, like mucinex. I take the adult version, and it works for me, so why not a child sized dose? It seems to keep the congestion under control in both my kids. I do think there are some antihistimines unnecessarily added to cold medications. As far as experiments go, there are none that show they don't work either. If a parent can't give the correct dose, it is the prescribing doctor's and pharmacist's jobs to educate the parent. I remember a pharmacist taking out the medicine dropper and a "sharpie" permanent black marker pen and marking the level of the liquid dose on the dropper even though I knew how to measure. Perhaps people need to demonstrate knowledge of how to measure the medicine before they can purchase it.
