We saw the GI surgeon today and he confirmed that Kyle should have the Nisson surgery done. HIs ph probe showed a lot of reflux like 36 episodes in a 24 hour period. Which in Dec when he had it done the nurse tried to saw it wasnt that bad.I did talk to the surgeon at that time and he said to try the medicine first. Due to the aspirating he says it should be done.I hate to do it but I feel it is the best thing for Kyle. I dont want him in any more pain and he sure is alot of the time. This is the 2nd GI surgeon that we have seen so this is a 2nd opinion. My first one is deployed(Army)and wont be back until July. Vicki

Aww best of luck with all this Kyle and Vicki. It's a wrenching decision but I am with you it must be SO hard to see him having this pain. And the aspirtating has to be taken seriously. Just wanted to let you know we are thinking of you and hope you can report back with good results.

Vicki~ I'm sorry that Kyle is struggling with this, and that you have to make a hard decision. Sure does seem like he needs the surgery though, doesn't it? He'll be in my thoughts and prayers. Susan

Well, I am glad you are getting some more answers about all this for Kyle. And yes, if he really is aspirating, that is nothing to take lightly..... Prayers for you and Kyle!
Keep us posted on when the surgery is!

;D HI!!!! Sorry Kyle hasta go thru the surgery but man aspiration is very serious. Debi is right. Olivia usta aspirate her milk and food due to a compression on her esophogus. It was bad and aspirating too much can cause scar tissue on your lungs which is irreversible. That is no good. Liv's lower rt lobe is scarred pretty good so thats no good cause it won't go back to regualr ever. My husband has fibrosis of his lungs and its not a pretty site.If he's aspirating I would take it very seriously myself. Awww good luck. How old is he? When Olivia was about 1 and a half and her reflux(hers is silent no puking just aspirated or swallowed it. YUCK. The docs suggested Nissen but her GI doc suggested since it was so close to her walking to wait till she walked a couple of months. She did great after walking for 2 months and never needed the fundoplication... GOOD LUCK Steff

Yes they are going to do laposcope (sp). And he has been walking since last June or before. They did xrays in Dec and has 5 since and a couple of weeks ago the xrays showed stuff all over. The pulmonary doc said he was aspirating and he need the surgery. Vicki

I am starting to go through the same process with my son Josiah (20 months). I am getting a ped GI and a ph probe done. What does the ph probe consist of... I heard the doc sticks a wire down through the nose. I did not know how really serious this was until I read all of your postings. The doctor thinks my son is asperating due to many pnemonia's and vomitting.

We were lucky enough to bypass the Nissen....so far. justin has been a silent aspirater, refluxer, all with severe GERD. He is currrently on Reglan 4xday and prevacid 1xday. This combined with switching him from GT to JT feeds has alleviated almost all of the refluxing and aspirating. We were only advised to do the Nissen if the Jtube did not help. We got lucky!!!
There is another mom I am friends with who has three children with DS. All three have had the Nissen fundoplication done. If you want, I will try to connect you with her for her input.
Good luck. I truly understand where you are coming from.
