Changing the topic for a moment but still self talk...We first realized that Emily could talk...and just how well... through self talk.
She was in a language development class at age 3 and when I would go watch through a one way window I would see her happily interacting and never uttering a sound. Karen her ST was as frustrated as we were. At home she had some short two and three word phrases that were easy to understand but mostly she ...listened. ;D
It was one night when she was in the tub with about a thousand Barbies that I listened in and to my amazement heard her talking in full sentences equal to or better than my other kids as 3+ year olds! First thing I did was pick up the phone and call Karen her ST who was also a friend. This continued through the years and to this day it amazes me that Emily who doesn't intitate conversation that much can talk non stop for hours if she so desires.
As she gained in vocabulary her everyday speech remained quite good but it was still the bathtub in those days where she reminded me that she could communicate...LOL.
