Just wondering if anyone has applied for and received the Katie Becket Medicaid waiver from your state? Or checking to see about anyone's experience trying to get it. And I am a State social worker... Still in the dark Kim

We do have Katie Beckett waiver - just google Katie Beckett & your state. We are in RI - Katie Beckett is run thru the dept of mental health. You apply like applying for ssi - difference is Katie Beckett does NOT look at the parent's income when determining eligibility - just the recipient. below is brief desc from my state website.
Medical Assistance coverage is also available for certain children under age 18 who have disabling conditions and live at home. This program enables children with special health care needs or disabilities to be cared for at home instead of in an institution. Only the child’s income and resources are used in determining financial eligibility. The cost of care at home compared to the cost in an institutional setting is also used in determining eligibility.

Thanks Haley's mom. I searched under the Deparment of Health and Human Services and did not think to look under the mental health area. I appreciate your response. It gives me a starting point. Not sure if I am going to apply. Dani just recently lost Medicaid due to my income.I am a single mom and Dani is my only child. Take care, Kim

Kim, definetly apply - it is not based on your income. the assistance you got before must have not been katie beckett. We are a 2 income family and Haley qualified. Maybe your state's program is run under another division - what state are you in? Just google Katie Beckett + your state and you should find something.

We are from RI too. As a matter of fact, I just recently had to re-certify. Our state doesn't have a waiting period...and if they did...it's got to be pretty short because we received our approval rather quickly. It goes on Daniel's income (which is zero). It's basically another pathway into medicaid (if you don't qualify based on need). We have private insurance that pays first...and whatever isn't covered the medicaid comes in and pays the remainder (including copays and prescriptions). I wouldn't have medicaid without the KB waiver because both my husband and I work.

We have it in MO but it's not called Katie Becket... all states should have some sort of waiver but not all of them are called the KB waiver... ours is like Sarah Lopez or something like that... ours too is based on need, no income and each county gets so many to give out.... so we sit on a waiting list.
