Hi I recently was contacted by old childhood friend who just move to NYC. She is a very talented beautician. She has a love for children with DS, always has and wants to use her talents to help kids with DS. She would like to donate her time and service to kids preferably 8 and up in the NYC area. She has no idea where to get started. She contacted teh NDScongress I think. They told her about a place about 5 hours away, she is going to go there but I am sure someone out there has more ideas. She wants to help in some way. Not just cutting hair but however she can. Does anyone have ideas of who she could contact or how she could get word out there about cutting kids hair for free in NY. Thanks, Jess

Hey, Charlie could use a haircut and we're less than 5 hours from NYC. Tell her to go to Penn Station and take the NJ Transit Trenton local. Oh, but then she'd have to catch a bus or we'd have to go pick her up. Wait, maybe it'd be better if she contacted NDSS, "Call the Goodwin Family Information and Referral Center at 1-800-221-4602, e-mail info@ndss.org ... or write to NDSS 666 Broadway, 8th floor, New York, New York 10012. Or she could contact some local support groups in the NYC area, maybe even pick the one closest to her, like New York City Down Syndrome Parent Group 115 East 87th Street, #6A New York NY 10128 212-496-2086 Email: jane.providenti@db.com or Down Syndrome Connection of Long Island P.O. Box 2402 Halesite NY 11743 631-721-32912 Email: info@dscli.org Website: www.dscli.orgI think there are probably others, just don't find their contact info. -- Bob

What a nice thing to do!
I don't know how to hook her up, but I would have LOVED to have someone with some empathy when Ethan was younger and haircuts were sheer torture for everyone involved.
I found a gal who cut hair in her home because I hated that people stared at Ethan while he had his haircut meltdown. Funny thing is, he's fine now, no issues at all, but his head used to practically spin around during a haircut, LOL!

? is she only interested in kids with DS or any and all kids with some kind of special needs? If she is into any and all kids maybe she could contact Columbia Children's/babies hospital and volunteer some there. Just a thought CC ~
