A huge news story broke early last week about a company out of Texas that has been "employing" 21 mentally retarded men in a turkey processing plant here in Iowa. The men have been living in deplorable conditions ... no heat, boarded up windows, padlocked doors, utter filth ... and were paid about 44 cents an hour for their work, in which they slaughtered and processed turkeys. There is an entire series of articles about the situation, beginning with the following: www.desmoinesregister.com/article/20090208/NEWS/902080344/-1/ATALISSAPlus, you can click here to access follow-up articles on this truly sickening situation: www.desmoinesregister.com/apps/pbcs.dll/section?category=ATALISSAIf you have trouble reading the original article, let me know and I'll post the text. This is awful...I sent the link to a friend who works at ARC/Texas. I have not seen it in our news anywhere.

Makes me glad that Stevie has lots of siblings - someone can always keep an eye out to ensure that she doesn't get exploited. Makes me sad for those who have little to no support system around them.

"Who's Tom Loker?" Probably should let Chris answer. Friend of Simon Legree, sort of. Both characters in Uncle Tom's Cabin. en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Uncle_Tom%27s_Cabin"During Eliza's escape, she meets up with her husband George Harris, who had run away previously. They decide to attempt to reach Canada. However, they are now being tracked by a slave hunter named Tom Loker. Eventually Loker and his men trap Eliza and her family, causing George to shoot Loker. Worried that Loker may die, Eliza convinces George to bring the slave hunter to a nearby Quaker settlement for medical treatment. ... At this point Tom Loker returns to the story. Loker has changed as the result of being healed by the Quakers. " www.sparknotes.com/lit/uncletom/terms/char_15.html"Tom Loker - A slave hunter hired by Mr. Haley to bring back Eliza, Harry, and George, Tom Loker first appears as a gruff, violent man. George shoots him when he tries to capture them, and, after he is healed by the Quakers, Loker experiences a transformation and chooses to join the Quakers rather than return to his old life." Think Chris was offering him as an example of an evil person who could be changed into a good person. May be something to that. Meanwhile, this story is very disturbing. And some parts of it that bother me are that parts of it have been investigated before, and it's been going on for years and years, and caretaker and mayor don't see anything wrong here. But glad to see that Sen. Harkin and Iowa governor and legislature are looking into why protection of the disabled is not working and how to make sure adequate protection is in place. -- Bob edited to add a few more links to news stories www.chicagotribune.com/news/chi-ap-ia-disabledworkers-p,0,7540324.story www.qctimes.com/articles/2009/02/13/news/local/doc499612f67a918943469094.txt?sPos=2www.wqad.com/news/wqad-atalissa-history-money-021809,0,5440754.story

this is so sad on how they treat workers who have a disibility. with all cuts beening made in public offices for county offices. seems like they do not have enough staff to check all places. this is a shame. sue
