I am very concerned about Laura because she has not had a solid BM in weeks. Every time she has a BM it is huge and wet. Many times she needs to get a bath because it is everywhere. She does not have diarrhea, as it is a single episode. the frequency is normal, one a day or every 2 days. We are keeping track of what she eats and giving her lactaid milk (my other daughter drinks it because she is lactose intolerant - we knew with her from a newborn). Her diet is normal and she hasn't been eating any new foods. we go to the ped next week. Have any of you had this? do you know what might cause it? I would like to go to the ped. with some suggestions.
thanks Marisa

Hi~ Taking a bath after each poop can be a time consuming task. I feel for you. What color is the poop? That can be a great indicator of something along with the consistancy. You can check on this website www.drjaygordon.com/development/pediatricks/poop.asp to see what he states. I just looked him up to see about my baby. She gets two oz of forumla and one oz of breastmilk (I do not make much milk) and his poop was army green without any seeds. I tried giving him all breastmilk and the BM was "normal" yellow and seedy. I guess the army green is just his normal color. Good luck with issue. Cheers, Kelly

Marisa, One thing that really helps when BM's are runny is FIBER. I swear by it!! It's an odd thing; really. Fiber helps people have Bm's if they are not having them..............AND it can add BULK to stools that are runny and gives them more firmness. So, it works both ways!! And the odd thing is that the fiber supplement we buy says "nonstimulant fiber laxative", which really threw me the first time the doc said to buy it.........cause the last thing we wanted was a laxative. But the fiber really does work to add bulk. Hope that helps. Maybe you could ask the doc if Laura needed some fiber?

Marisa,
You are going to think I am totally crazy for asking this but....could she be constipated?
About 9 months ago Collin started complaining his back hurt and started having accidents which were very running and at times explosive.
After xrays we found he was constipated and backed up. The only things making it around was the very loose watery part of the stool which came out forcefully.
It was cured with a 10 day to 2 week regimen of enemas, stool softeners, mineral oil and juice. Gross but helped a lot.
Just a thought

Not to add to the confusion and multiple suggestions, but this is what happens when Clarice gets into gluten. It also didn't start happening until she was about 3 years old. We had her tested for food intolerances (not allergies), and as soon as all of the offending foods such as eggs, dairy, and gluten were removed the problems decreased. We ended up doing an endoscopy and found colitis (colon inflammation). She is now on a restricted diet and takes medication.
Everytime I reintroduce any of the foods, the explosion occurs within minutes. It is watery, smelly, and runs down her legs and into her shoes in seconds. For awhile, I would travel with 3-4 changes of clothes, including shoes, and be prepared at all times with lots of wipes and plastic bags. There is a doctors note kept on file at the school that describes how her reaction appears different than a child with diarrhea, so the school knows to change her and not send her home sick. She carries a change of clothes in her backpack, and I keep a set of old clothes in my car. These days she rarely needs them.

Connie, I don't think it is constipation simply due to the amount. they are usually large and sometimes have some substance, not always watery, but always loose. However, I will bring this up to the doctor. I am not ready to rule anything out. I like this and the fiber suggestion by Susan. these seem to be easy fixes and I ready for that!
I am leaning more along the lines of where Kristin is with Clarice. My bigest fear is Celiac, which I believe can be ruled out (or, guple, confirmed) with a blood test. My major fear with diet changes are the fact that I have another child who is an extemely picky eater.
Laura's dr. appt is next Tues. but we are one BM from me calling to push up the appt. The worry is driving me crazy.

Hi Marisa neighbor:
I would have a stool sample tested. My son went through that when he was 3 turned out to be some type of bacteria but the Dr. thought maybe Giardia because I breed dogs. You can also get it from water, public pools, wild birds and many other places.
Good luck
by the way did you like the snow, we got 12 inches here in Tabernacle.

Annette, Laura goes to swimming lessons every week. Oh, I hope it is not that. It was hard for me to do the lessons because I skeeve (sp?) public pools. Oasis water park is opening around the corner from my house and Kathryn knows not to even ask to go because mommy thinks it is gross!! Ugh, but hey, that could be corrected. Not happy about a possible lifestyle change. I am going to call the doctor to see about the stolo sample. I am guessing I could collect it when she goes and drop it off. I don't really want to store it.
As for the snow, i was not happy at all!!! We got a 10 inches or so. I do not like the cold or snow. I am the mom inside making the hot chocolate. I always say the stork dropped me at the wrong place. I should be on a tropical island, I love summer!!

Ok so it might help, marlena had this problem a few months back her GI doc said it was "post viral IBS" and talking to a lot of nutritionalists, 1 finally had the answer, High Fat Diet, sound bad,I know. but marlena had a little viral infection and months after the antibiotics were done she developed water poo. This pediatric nutritionlist said to add high fat foods to her diet she suggested things like extra butter yuk! so i gave her heavy whipping cream (about 2 ounces a day) and by golly she got better in 1 day. 7 weeks of exploding water poo gone! GI doc said that the fat in the whipping cream slowed the digestion process enuf to form into poo. however i dont think anyone should try this without talking to the doctor!

Laura's GI dr. thought something similar with Laura, however she has not been sick. She taken off all juice with barely a change. Now we are going to try FLORAFTOR. It is what is found in yogurt to regulate digestion. we are going to do 2 weeks of this and if still no change they are going to scope her. UGH!! I hope this new thing works....

I have IBS and have to eat a lot of fiber to keep from having explosive BMs. I like the new YoPlus yogurt by Yoplait. It is so yummy, has added fiber plus the probiotics. Wonderful stuff! I start my day with 2 slices of Brownberry Double Fiber bread (6 grams of fiber per slice). I try not to eat any white flour or white rice. If I stay on a lowfat (especially animal fat), high fiber diet, I have very few unpleasant episodes.
Does Laura have cramping or pain?

It seems like the probiotics did the trick!! Laura loves yogurt, so it is awesome they are adding them into the yogurts now!! I am still going to give her the over the counter probiotics though because they are specifically designed for kids. The dr. said I can add it in the yogurt so that is what I have been doing. I am so happy!!!!!!!!! I feel like I can move forward with the potty training now too.
Chris, not sure if Laura has pain or cramping because she never complains. this is also the kid who was eating hard prezels 24 hours after her T and A removal. She is one tough cookie!!
