I have been really getting the run around looking for a developmental pediatrician for John. He has some behaviors I would like to get some guidance on and I can't seem to get an appt. at U of M. I am hearing that if he is over 5 he can't see developmental ped, must go to psychiatry? Doesn't that sound crazy? I am not objecting ot psychiatry if that is the correct place for treatment, but I think they are ignoring the DS part of the equation.... HELP!! I need names of Dr. to contact!

Who did you hear from that if he is over 5 he can't see a devel ped? Sounds silly. That said, in the beginning we were given Dr's names to both dev peds and psychs.... the one we REALLY wanted to see and came highly regarded was a psych... long story but we couldn't get in to see him even though we went through the process to see him. We are now with a devel ped. I personally think either is fine..... Russell is now 11 and see's a Devel Ped.
What big cities are you near?

I would like to keep him with U of M, I have had him seen there for other things.... I could call his cardiologist I suppose for some names- I googled developmental peds too and when I called the one closest I was told I have to be a patient at the hospital ( U of M or Mott) in order to get into that particular clinic. The other weird thing is that my insurance is very fussy about psychiatry benefits-
I am working through his regular ped office, who told me they were told about the age limit on developmental peds. I think that person has bad information- that just doesn't seem right. I appreciate your advice!!

Yes, I think the person in the ped's office needs to be questioned again or ask them to show you where that's stated... if that is company policy or what...... good luck... what city is U of M in??

I have an appointment for Sarah to see a physiatrist who also is a behavioral specialist. She runs the Exceptional Family program out of Oakwood Hospital in Dearborn. It takes about six months to get an appointment. Ours is December 3. We'll see how it goes!

Carolyn justin was seeing Dr. Barbera Felt he was well past five too. He was seeing her until last year when she thought he would be better off being followed through psych. She was great, she even had me set up an appt with his school after I told her about the trouble we were having. Lol wish I had a camera to get the look on everyones face when we walked in and she introduced herself. She also would call and check on us. The number there is 734 936-9777 located first floor taubman just past ob/gyn. Have your doc fax over referral our ins is weird about it too they covered her but not psych she is a developmental behavioralist. Justin is now being seen out by domino farms U of M east campus I beleive

Not from Michigan or even near Michigan BUT you said "I am hearing that if he is over 5 he can't see developmental ped, must go to psychiatry? Doesn't that sound crazy?" YES that sounds CRAZY Can I ask who told you that? My boy didn't even see a developmental ped till he was Hmmm 8 or 9 I think it was. Ped means Ped and that goes for ones till they are 21 I believe. Jackie- thanks so much for the name and number. I will follow up on that tomorrow. CC: It was the woman who handles the scheduling for the reg. ped. office. She sets up appts and/or follows up on referrals to make sure appt. have been made. Here is what I am starting to think. I wonder if his ped. who is brand new to us and the practice, put down anxiety as the reason for the referral, which is part of the problem, but in my estimation, the problem is Down syndrome and anxious behaviors... I believe he needs both aspects considered in his care. Anyhow, I guess I will call her tomorrow too, and ask just what the dr. referrals that is making all this such a mess. ARGHHHH!! Thanks for everyone's help and concern!

Carolyn, We saw Dr. Felt at U of M as well. Here's a link to her info, but she is a developmental and behavioral pediatrician. We really liked her, and our experience was similar to Jackie's - she was VERY supportive about school issues, and although I didn't need her assistance, it was awful nice to know it was there. And Ethan was over five years old the first time he saw her! www2.med.umich.edu/departments/mott/index.cfm?fuseaction=Peds.facultyBio&individual_id=17928MB, I'd be interested in your presentation as well. We're about two hours from Grand Rapids, and Ethan will be 8 in December. A., U of M is in Ann Arbor, MI.

Hello,
First, Jason's doctor at U of M is Dr. Joseph Hornyak. He is the "Down syndrome" doctor at U of M. We really, really like him as does Jason. We got a referral from Jason's regular Pediatrician at MSU to go see him about Jason's anger management issues and he is the one that prescribed his Zoloft. We were able to get in to see him in a reasonable amount of time.
His office is not on the U of M campus, but still there in Ann Arbor on Eisenhower Parkway and is one of the U of M satellite locations. MUCH easier to navigate to this office building rather than the actual hospital campus!!
Office number: 734.936.7175
Their staff is excellent! Good luck!
