I have heart in the news that we can go on governmental web site and find out where in our area the convicted sex offenders live. Do you know that web site? Thanks!

Alice when they first came out with this list I just typed in my State and then sex offenders list under search. Just remember they are not always updated so the info maybe wrong, such as although the offender is required to register with the city upon moving in, they are not required to unregister when they move out, so they may still be coming up as living there when they are not.

Alice: that's what I did too, I just typed in "Michigan Sex Offenders" and it gave me the link. Should be the same way for every state.
I bet you will be surprised when you see the list for your particular area, I know I was. I live in a relatively small town and there is quite a list there. That's just my town, I didn't include Lansing, which we are right on the border of and is a much larger city.
In addition to keeping in mind that they move and may not "unregister", it's somewhat ambigious when reading what they were charged for. For one, they could have plea bargained for a reduced sentence and therefore maybe committed a worse crime than what it looks to be. On the flip side, I had a cousin whose teenage son thought that it would be pretty funny to streak at a high school football game. They threatened to charge him with indecent exposure - which would have put him on the sex offender's list. They didn't, thank God!

I did the same as Jackie, just typed in my state and sex offenders. We actually have a sex offender 4 houses down from us, he's on the website and I even checked with our police department to and sure enough he's still 4 houses down from us. We don't let Ian & Betty out of our sites. How scary !!!

we were just talking about this the other day, my mom and I. I've gotten several letters from the school district saying there are registered offenders in our district. they send the same letter over and over (form letter) so I don't know if it's the same person or 4 different ones!! And we live in a SMALL district! (900 kids in jr/sr high)
Of course the NY state directory isn't working right now...but I'll check back.
scary scary stuff. thanks for bringing it up though. laurie
