It took a year, but Joy is finally potty trained! She's had zero accidents this week, and is even staying dry overnight! I don't mean to brag, but I am so excited about this. Now she can take dance next fall. They wouldn't take her last fall because she was still in diapers. Hooray!!

Cathy, I would have to say the secret is persistance. She has been poopin' on the potty for a looooong time, but would not pee on it. We decided several months ago to just let it be and let her come into it on her own. Well in about February our babysitter commented that Joy was going on the potty and staying dry all day at her house. Surprise! We had her in pull-ups and weren't even taking her to the potty, except to poop, at home. The next day I went out and bought a couple of packages of Dora underpants, a bunch of stickers and one of those little potty rings that fits inside the regular toilet seat 'cause I wanted to teach her to use the big potty instead of a potty chair. I also got some fun kid soap and a pretty towel. Motivational tools. We put her in underwear and told her not to pee on Dora and Boots, and to our surprise, she didn't!!! We got her on a schedule of taking her about every 45 minutes because she wasn't telling us when she needed to go. But every time she got on the potty and went, and had dry pants, she got a sticker and she got to wash her hands with the nice soap and towel. This is a kid who LOVES washing her hands, so that was a good motivator. After a couple of very consistent weeks of "Potty Training Boot Camp," she started to get it. We talked a lot about wet and dry, and I think she just started to become aware that she has control over those muscles and can hold it. This past week has been her spring break from school, so full-time days at the babysitter has helped immensely. She has received the same consistency there that she gets at home, and it is working. She hasn't had an overnight accident since last Friday night (March 18) and she hasn't had a daytime accident since last Sunday (March 20), which I don't even count as her fault because she was at children's church with a lot of other kids and I think all the commotion threw her off. She is now even telling us when she has to go, so trips to the bathroom are on her schedule, not ours. Long story short, I really believe it's consistency. We gave her a few months to mature, and when she started showing signs she was ready, we hit it hard. We gave her lots of praise when she stayed dry, and when she had accidents we said stuff like, "Wet...yuck! Stay dry, Joy!" Simple things she could understand. I am very excited about her being trained, but I am going to put her in a pull-up for church tomorrow, because I don't want her to have an accident on her Easter dress! Have a great day!
