Ok...need some help here. Katie took her 7 yr old to get her hair cut yesterday and discovered she had LICE!...yuk. They advised her to get a lice kit and use it on everyone in the house. Then her hubby went on line and found all sorts of info that disputed what the lice kit said. Said NOT to use the spray on the furniture cuz lice only live 4 hrs off the head and it could also be toxic. Meanwhile Hayden is dancing around saying "Get these bugs OUTTA my hair"...LOL ...all this trying to get ready for a swim team banquet...I can just SEE it all... ;D
Guess they had mulitple hair washings the rest of the afternoon...and then Emily wondered if the dogs could get it...(they can't)...and went to her computer and came down saying all they could get is worms...and then proceeded to describe in detail what she had read about worms in dogs...hee hee....just what no one needed at that point.
Anyhow...if any of you have dealt with this ...let me know how it turned out and what worked best in case this didnt take care of it for them. A friend in UK recommended vinegar if the shampoo fails to do the job.
Jackie mom to Emily 26....ps...just Katies two kids appear to have any.

Washing your hair and using a apple cider vinegar as a rinse, just dont wash the vinegar out. Pour it over the hair and let it dry. It will make your hair shiny as a n added bonus. My cousins were always getting lice, they used a combo of the kit and vinegar it worked. They also made sure to WASH everything...toys, srtuffed animals, bedding, anything that can be a home. Dry clean down comforters etc. Good luck. Oh, and last resort for my cousins were REALLY short haircuts. So when they did get lice it was easier to get out. Robin

We just experienced lice this year with Alethea. She was the only one to get them although the rest of us surely felt them crawling in our hair!!!
Everyone got a hairwashing the first time. Then 7 days later we washed Alethea's hair again. We used RID and that did the trick. The nits are the things to get rid of. I sat for 2 entire weeks, combing through her getting rid of nits. Fingernails do a wonderful job of pulling the nits out of the hair.
All stuffed animals went on the backporch for 2 weeks. All blankets, towels, etc. in the wash.
So not fun! Give my condelences to Katie!

THankfully I have not been through this, but a friend of mine did...I remember her saying that she had to wash EVRYTHING possible in the house I don't recall her saying anything about using a LICE KIT on furniture and linens....but that she did thouroughly clean everything posible.....
she said the worst part was....when the lice do finally die.....her daughter woke up in morning with dead lice all over her pillow....eeeewwwhhhhh......so NOT what a teenage girl (or anyone else) wants to see !! Best of luck ......now this may be a time when I actually utter "God only gives you what you can handle"....I can handle a LOT.....but probably not THIS !!

Just reading this made my scalp itch! Ditto to everything everyone said, these buggers can be tough to get rid of, especially in girls with long hair. I finally called the dr. and got a prescription shampoo, that did the trick. UGH UGH UGH. Good luck!

Jackie.. I responded to this on the "beware" post... but when Regan had it bad... we washed as much as we could with HOT HOT HOT water.... we threw away a couple things I just thought would be best... and things like stuffed animals, ect.. you can put in plastic trashbags and suffocate the little buggers! Lice need air to survive and they suffocate easily. And yes, we did wash with vinegar and used stuff like vasoline and pastic baggies on Regan's head because she had it worse and longer then the 1-2 application would allow.
Oh.. and I DID use the spray stuff.... I felt it it worked just fine.. didn't worry about toxicity and well, it was for my piece of mind!

Jackie,
we had a problem with this also. We used a natural spray called "DEBUG".(nice, huh). It doesn't contain any chemicals so its not toxic and you can use it on babies, pregnant women, etc. You can also spray it on your furniture. Also don't forget to spray your car, carseats, etc. We used it for a few days...you wet hair with solution, put on a plastic cap for about 20 minutes, use a nit comb and then rinse. Do this for a few days, then again about 2 weeks later. Good Luck!

yes... it usually comes with the kit... it's basically a VERY VERY FINE TOOTHED COMB... metal I do believe.. I can't remember. That comb only helped SOOO much with us... I had to use my own fine toothed comb and my fingers for the most part and picked ALOT out like that too. SUCH A PAIN!!!!

Funny when Alethea had her bout with lice, I felt like I had them for sure!!! I went to the school nurse to have her check my head just in case, because I was on my way to the hairdresser and didn't want the embarassment of it being announced in the salon that I had little critters crawling in my hair! LOL
