Hey all! Aidan isn't walking quite yet, still (he's 3 1/2)...but we're working hard! Since his intestional surgery in April, he's getting so much stronger, and that's awesome! He walks a little bit...but it MUST be from the couch TO me, or someone he trusts. His PT thinks he'll be walking soon, but she's said this for a year now, so who knows. I was just wondering who had walkers...like the professional pediatric walkers, not the toy walkers...we've got plenty of those And how did you get them? Did your PT provide them, did the school, did you go through insurance, etc? And how do you think your kiddos did with the walkers. His PT thinks that it'd be crazy to order a walker for him since he'd probably be walking before the thing gets here! I dunno...I kind of think he needs one. Who knows. So, any input would be greatly appreciated! While I'm on the subject...did your kiddos have really turned in ankles? Aidan's does...bad! They are also getting stronger, though. He will not wear his AFO's at all...actually, he's outgrown them...and I have an appt with an ortho doc to hopefully get Sure Step orthotics...since I've heard such rave reviews about them! Unfortunately, our appt isn't until August! Augh! I hate to wait that long, that's for sure! Thanks for your help! Right now, Aidan is across the street at our neighbors house with his dad jumping on a trampoline, which he loves! That's gotta be strengthening something! haha Staci

Staci Justin just started walking in Nov of last year and he still isnt real steady and cant stand from the floor up he has to crawl to something and pull up.Justin will be in 4 in July Justin's PT did get him a peds walker and I fell he did real good with it and it did help but then he got to where he wanted to pick it up and carry it so we tied weights around the legs and that seemd to help, I thing it wouldnt hurt to get him on becasue Justins PT said for over year "He will walk anytime now" and he did almost a year latter. Becky, that's awesome that Justin is walking! YEY! I feel like Aidan would be so much closer to walking if he had had his surgery sooner rather than later...he is gaining and growing by leaps and bounds now, it's really amazing! But, he'll get there! And then him and Justin can run around together and get into plenty! I can't wait! Thanks for your help, Becky! It's always nice to be reminded that Aidan WILL get there! Staci

Adam started to walk with the help of a walker at 3 and 1/2 and without assistance at 4 and 1/2. Now he runs all over and I can't keep up with him. ;D ;D It will come, my niece's daughter also DS started to walk at 16 mths. Some take a little longer. In Adam's case he has really poor muscle tone and was also sick in the hospitl most of his first 2 years of life, so that didn't help. Your son will walk and then you will need good running shoes. ;D

Hi Staci If I had a quarter for every time I heard she'll be walking anytime now!!! lol We did get a pediatric walker for Raven when she was 3. I thought it really helped at the time, however, I ended up taking it away from her after about a year. She walked great with it, but didn't seem to be progressing anymore with it.....she started using it as a crutch. I think a lot has to do with the temperment of the child....Raven we need to be very careful....if you give an inch, she'll take a mile We have to just throw her in situations & let the cards fall I know this sounds mean, but I am not sure how else to show her. For example, when she was about 2 she learned to get up into a sitting position from lying down, however, she couldn't get back down. Getting down is the easy part!! Anyway, I would just push her down & let her catch herself. It worked I think if you feel a walker will help, then go for it. We got ours thru the insurance company....I think you just need to call them & ask how to go about it....ask about coverage for adaptive equipment. I think all we needed was a script from the pediatrician. They usually run about $150-200, but insurance should foot most of it if you jump thru their hoops. I would definitely encourage AFO's, they have been great for Raven. She wouldn't be this far without them, that is for sure. I am hoping to get the sure steps this time, her appt is in July. As for Raven, she has taken some steps & has walked a lot for her PT....about 300 feet complete with turning around. However, she doens't like to do it for me little stinker!!! Good luck btw...Raven loves the trampoline too

Russell didn't walk until he was 3. And not really good for another 9 months or so after that. We didn't use a Ped walker but have heard wonderful things about it. Our PT would take Russell outside with one of those Fisher Price AFrame type toy walkers and he would wear overalls. She had the BEST hold on him but it didn't hold his body back, if you know what I mean. Then when he was ready to walk, she would try it without it. But.. using overalls to hold on... just barely.. helped lots too!
Food for thought!!!! Start walking around the block LOL!

Nicky was nearly 5 before he walked. He can walk well (but not far because of his heart condition) but has always been unsteady walking over rough ground and wants to take hold of my hand. He cannot run but will sometimes walk faster than usual and I think he thinks he is running ;D Pauline UK.

Staci- My daughter had a walker provided by her PT and it worked wonderfully! She was a late walker also. She started walking at 3yrs but she also did not have any medical problems. The walker gave her the experiance of walking without the "risk" and that helped her a lot. She just got big for her britches and let go of it one day and then the walker was history. If your PT has not given you this option yet I would ask them to. If they can't provide you one then I would go to a medical supply store and inquire about one with them. If they don't have one I bet they could order one or recommed somewhere else to go. Good luck and I am sure he'll be walking soon!
God Bless!

Thank you, everyone! I think I am going to pursue (sp?) the quest of getting a ped walker very soon. I think he's getting so much stronger that he is able to walk...he just doesn't have the confidence, and the walker might (or might now, cuz he sounds just as stubborn as Raven, Annie ) help him achieve that confidence. Also, we need to work on keeping our glasses ON, he has major vision problems...that could be hindering his walking, too. We'll see! I am definitely going to call our insurance and see how to get one...because I don't think the PT will help me get one anytime soon, unfortunately. That's not high on their priority list. Thanks for all of the advice, help, words of encouragement! I appreciate it! Staci
