Hi everyone, We are in the process of potty training our 6 yr. old son Jacob. It seems as though he strugles with constipation which doesn't help matters. When he goes poop in the potty it is usually small balls and not much quantity. Is this common in ds kids and does anyone have any suggestions. Thanks!

Pear juice - 100% without sugar works around here. Also eating canned pears or peaches may help too.
Cut down on cheese, bananas, anything binding.
Good luck

My son recently went through a bout with constipation. (I am blessed that he prefers fruit over anything except ice cream) so we only sturggle if I am not paying attention. I had to see a gastro specialist for another reason and we did discuss constipation because of how difficult it is when you are trying to overcome the huge hurdle of potty training He felt strongly that the child should not be constipated at all (negative association with going potty) and I was very surprised when he suggested the old fashioned remedy of 1 teasp to 1 tblspn (start small and work up if necessary)of mineral oil in juice once a day. I haven't tried it yet but you might read up on its pros and cons.. I wish you lots of luck with potty training Good luck

Kearns (kerns?) Apricot nectar works great too...you can find it in small cans - in 6 packs. If you can't find it in the regular juice aisle - Goya makes different types too and I usually find those in the ethnic food section (near the Mexican stuff) at the grocery store. Also, theoretically, just adding extra physical activity and extra water to the diet is supposed to help too. laurie

My son suffers from severe constipation and he refuses to eat anything that will help with it. Right now he is on 2 tsp. of Miralax a day and it WORKS! Since he has been on it he hasnt had any problems getting things going! Good Luck! Shawn
