My dd, almost 14 months, got her glasses. They are working just fine, she leaves them on with no hassle. PTL.
Like many kids with DS, she has virtually no bridge on her nose. The nose pads (the bigger, softer ones) are there but I wonder if something else may work better. She still nurses a lot during the day and they do kind of get askew when she nurses. I could take them off each time, but would rather not do that.
I was thinking that what might work well is to do away totally with the nose pieces, and attach "piece" to the center of the glasses. Something kind of in the shape of a Chiclet chewing gum piece or something like a large oval pill shape. This whole piece would sit on the (virtually non-existent) nose bridge. I am taking my dh and stopping by next week to see if he and the fellow (who seemed pretty good) can brainstorm adn come up with something a bit better tahn what we have now.
Anyone ever think of this? Any thoughts on the matter? TIA. Yours in Christ, Kathy

Kathy,
When I took Katie to Wal-Mart to have her glasses adjusted they told me that there is a way to adjust the nose pieces "out" more so that they fit on our kids. They said that it is common for our children with no bridges as well as many Asian people. The nose pads are pulled out from the frames a little... hard to explain, but maybe you could stop by an Optical center and ask them.
I also found that Katie's glasses were always too big and that we could not keep the glasses on her properly, now that she has some that fit perfect that problem seems to be gone.
Does your daughter have the kind with wrap around ear pieces? Those hold the glasses up on the faces better.. Just some suggestions from a poor mother who is on pair number 8 in a year. These have lasted the longest and fit the best. They are the titanium (Flexon) ones with wrap around ear pieces special ordered smaller. Cost a bit more, but last much better. Even when Katie tries to take them off, they seem to hold up!
Hugs and Good luck!
Cathy

I was going to suggest the same thing as Cathy did. Ashlie got her glasses at 10 mos and we found a lil pair made by Fisher Price that were still a lil big on her face but fit her the best and we always do wrap around ear pieces as this is the best thing we have found to try to help her glasses staying up on her nose.

Russell wore glasses since shortly after birth. He wore the kind that wrap around the ears... AND Oshkosh made a pair that had a nose piece that actually WRAPPED around the nose!!!!
I will try and find a link so you can see them. We love them!!!!!
Also... our doc and the tech INSISTED on plastic frames for Russell.. for different reasons... they slipped off the WORST.. when I finally said NO MORE PLASTIC, I changed to wire rims and they worked BETTER because they can adjust a bit easier for anyone's face and they aren't as heavy as the plastic frames to slide off.

MOMO,
I am ROFL here... wrap around "NOSES" you are too funny...
The Wrap around ear pieces is also known as Cable.
Couldn't find a picture of the ones we have...I do know that our eye dr had to special order "smaller ones" I think Karie has "38 or 39" most of them are 43 or bigger...
But Again I will reiterate... they are "more costly" but very much worth it.. because, if my child can keep them on...anyone can~!
Hugs and good luck
Cathy

LMAO...A!!!! You are GOOD girl. I am amazed and relieved that you found such a good picture of the "wrap-around" nose piece. You saved me lots of grief trying to explain what it is. I just wanted to chime in and say that that nose piece....whatever they actually call it exists and does work well and you should be able to get it put on as a replacement for any glasses with regular nose pieces. Patrick's frames don't come with it....his doc puts it on all Patrick's frames in the office. So, take a printout to your eye doc and tell them to get one for you to try.

No offense here (Laura Snowbeast..errrr Snowbird) but I must have been havingquite the blond moment.

Things are going good. She leaves them on. We tried regular nosepieces, now have the one-piece wrap-around. Still not quite right- leaves marks. The strap didn't work well at all- in order for it to be tight enough to be effective, we couldn't get it on/off her ehead. Made do with some thin velcro strips that are used to bunch together electrical cords- they have a slot and you pass the velcro throough. Put one on each side and just Velcro them together. really quick and easy and we can get it nice and tight. Must be too tight, though, as it''s leaving marks on her nose. If we keep it looser, they slide down and she looks over the top, granny style. I'm thinking maybe shorter temple pieces (the side from frame to ear)? Any other thoughts? Still nothing has worked real well when nursing. (It's okay, usually, but it still slides around near her eyes). That's why I thinking the Velcro thing will be good- I can take them off easy each time she nurses so they don't poke her in the nose. Thanks much for all your advice! Yours in Christ, Kathy

Well, our frames that had that wrap around nose piece was from Oshkosh.. but when I tried to find them, I couldn't. That was 5 or 6 yrs ago though. I know other brands make them too.. but not many. I just found that site and found that pic to show you all what I was talking about... and that I wasn't loosing it.

Kathy-
Are they using the silicone nose bads on her glasses? I usually have to request that for Natalie's glasses and I find they really make a big difference from the just plastic ones. Now her glasses still fall a little down but not near as bad as if she didn't have the other pads. Now all I have to figure out is how to get her to keep them on all day ;D
P.S. A lot of the optical places will sell you glasses just to make a buck..does her doctor have a place he can suggest you buy a pair?
Good luck!
Amy

Never heard of that, but I do have another piece of advice. They measure the frames various ways. One measurement that is important is for the "temple piece" which is the piece from the lens "area" that extends back behnd the ear. My dd has one that is 100 mm. She had 115, and that was too long. They said they had no shorter ones, and I found in the box a 110 that they put on hers. Actually 110 is a bit big, but I couldn;t find a 100 or 105 anywhere and I searched the net pretty good. Best of luck, Yours in Christ, Kathy
