Hi: A friend of mine has a little boy, 10 months old with ds, having seizures. They are afraid to put him on anti-seizure drugs as they supposedly delay development. Please anyone who has been there done that respond with words of wisdom I can give her. I have heard that each seizure damages the brain. Thanks

The seizures damage the brain and delay development far more than the meds. I work with kids who have had seizures and their latter development has been soooooooooo affected. It's so very very difficult to have a dual dx of DS and seizures but if at all possible I would hope you can talk to your friend about getting more info and hopefullly the baby can soon be seizure free.

My little girls both have seizures and they are both on Phenobarbital. It is the seizure med that is approved for use in children under 2. It has NOT delayed their development, as a matter of fact it has done the opposite. My daughter who does not have DS was at a 3 month level developmentally at 8 months old. She was put on seizure medication and within 2 weeks she was at a 9 month level. The difference in her was incredible.
I have been talking to a lady who has a ten month old son with DS and seizures, so I may have already talked to your friend. However feel free to have her email me.

Hello. I hope you don't mind me jumping in here. I am a person who has Down syndrome. I have seizures too. I was diagnosed with the petite mall seizure's. I did not know what was happening to me at first. I take Carbatrol for the seizures and it has really helped me. I have been on this drug for some time now. Who knows how long I had been experiencing them. It could have started when I was a child. I wasn't diagnosed until well into my late thirties or early forties. I am forty four now. I was pretty surprised at that.
