I got a call from my sister yesterday. She was watching Caillou on PBS with her 3 year old daughter. Caillou was in preschool and a little boy there had his own "helper". Caillou couldn't understand why the boy had his own helper and they explained that the little boy had DS. I was very excited to hear they had this on a prescholers TV show.
I would like to get the DVD of this episode but can't find it. It might not be available yet. Anyone else see it?

I wish we could get that in the UK! We do have a pre-schoolers programme called 'something special' - made by BBC It features all sorts of disabilities but most commonly DS. It also teaches signing! Shows a lot of children in their home environments or going shopping etc. There's a real focus on similarites rather than differences! Its very popular here! I think its fabulous. On a similar note, one of our most popular soaps "Eastenders" has just introduced a storyline where a couple (main characters) had a baby girl who was diagnosed with ds shortly after the birth. I've never really watched it before but i've been glued to it since! Its funny how you suddenly feel there's a lot in the media when an issue affects you. Its probably been there all the while but i've just noticed more now. I'd swear the DS poulation had tripled since i had charlie if i didn't know differently.

WOW! I have to admit that I have never been a huge fan of Caillou - he seems a bit of a whiner, KWIM? And he's scared of EVERYTHING! But I am seriously impressed that they showed a child with an aide!

Wow, that's really cool. I don't mind Calliou, my daughter likes to watch him sometimes...I'll have to watch it more often, see if I can't catch this episode.

I agree...he sounds very whiney. My daughter used to watch him, but Andrew hasn't gotten into watching TV yet...not a bad thing at all...lol! I am so out of touch with kids shows now, but would love to get this episode on DVD. I thought it was great!!

You could call your PBS station and ask them about it. Maybe they could direct you to where you can buy the DVD.

I love hearing of kids showing getting into real life things such as diversity. But I must admit, I never let my kids watch Caillou cause I couldn't stand his voice! LOL

How sad my kids were watching it but I didn't even notice. We watch it because it's usually on between Sesame Street and Thomas The Train (Elmo, trains, airplanes, helicopters are the big hits in this house.) I'm so good at tuning out the annoying kids show that I totally missed it... oops I'll have to pay more attention from now on I guess.

Is Caillou still whining? I'm with the Caillou is whiner and thus, we've turned him off. Sorry about not knowing anything about the DVD you can find this particular episode on.
That is cool about the thought process of the writers. Someone must be affected with Ds in their family.
Renee, Hi-5. Ughhhh! They do the same show for 5 days in a row. However, do you cope?! LOL
