Hello gang, I have been on and off the board for a few years. I have a precious daughter named Danielle who is soon to be 5. Last year her father left us and have subsequently divorced. So, I am a single mom with a beautiful late in life miracle. My question, I do work full time and get child support. Has anyone ever applied for SSI benefits? Or gone through the process? Am curious what it entails. In love forever and ever with Dani. Kim

Hi Kim, Welcome to the board. I'm in the same boat as you....single with 3 kids..... I have applied for SSI in the past when my ex had fallen behind on support payments. It was a pretty easy ( though lengthy) processs. It is of course based on household income, so if you are working fulltime and he is paying support there is a chance you won't qualify ( but that in itself is a blessing)...... I called my local SS office, they mailed me an application and an appointment date & time. I returned with the completed application and a copy of Erin's lab results that showed Trisomy 21. She was accepted and recieved a small benefit check and was immediatley put on the state health plan ( which was nice because it covers co-pays that her primary insurance doesn't). After the court was able to garnish my ex's wages and my support came regularly I called SS to let them know of my change in household income and she no longer qualified, but it was a nice relief for the time needed. If you go to the SS website there are steps on how to apply for a child.....give it a try.....if you don't qualify count yourself lucky.....but I think it is worth the try because even if she doesn't qulaify for a monetary benefit, she may still qualify for the health benefit.....and all copays covered can add up for a child who sees a lot of specialists. Best of luck and welcome !!

I don't have any advise about SSI, but I do want to welcome you back to Uno. I just joined last spring, or late winter, and already feel like I've known the wonderful people here for years. It's great to meet you & I look forward to more posts from you.

Kim, Welcome to Unoland!!! I'm Connie, mommy to Collin who will be 8!!! That's just not right ...LOL!! SSI is based on household income and the child's disability. But, there are certain things that are not counted as income when determining the households resources. You really need to check with your local SSO. Every state is different when it comes to medical benefits. Here in Indiana just because your eligible for SSI, SS or SSD does not make you eligible for medicaid. It is a completely different application and process. They have completely different guidelines...I know makes no sense!!! But, that's a different thread Welcome back!! We're looking forward to hearing more about your Dani!!! Connie

In Indiana, though, there is a special health care service (called Children's Special Health Care Services - CSHCS) that covers co-pays & other regular insurance non-payables that are directly related to the qualifying diagnosis. This is how Stevie can get therapies that insurance and the Early Intervention services won't cover. It is also based on income, but it is a way higher threshhold than medicaid - medicaid in IN is around 150% of the poverty line, whereas, CSHCS is at 250% of the poverty line - for our family of 8, that's around $67,000 annually. I'm not sure about the threshhold for SSI, since we haven't applied (I'm pretty sure that the SSI income would put us over the threshhold for CSHSC). Connie and Allisa give good advise when they tell you to talk to your local SS office. They will know all the laws for your state. You can also go to your state's website. Indiana's is at www.in.gov then you can navigate right to the information you want, and often download printable forms. Best wishes Chris too

Been there/done that.
Angela's child support amount is about equal to what her SSI amount would be. I was told as long as she's getting child support she cannot get SSI. (never mind where we are in relation to income levels!) AND...lets say he stopped paying (he never pays consistently) and she was then awarded SSI. If I get even ONE child support payment within a year, I would have to pay back ALL of the SSI she received!
That's the way I understood it anyway. I haven't looked into it in 6+ years so I may be remembering incorrectly.

I believe here in PA, you could not have more than $2000.00 in checking & savings accts. You also could not have CD's & things like that. Pat

Chris, if your child qualifies for SSI, the automatically get Medical Assistance. It's a two-fer deal.

As Chris too mentioned there are different types of medicaid. Here in Indiana we also have different Medicaid Waivers which if the child qualifies will disallow (not count) the parents income and resources. I applied for the Support Service and Developmental Disability Waivers for Collin when he was 6 months old (he is now 7.5 yo) the last time I checked on his status they were calling 3rd qtr 2006 for the SS waiver and 2002 for the DD waiver. Good Morning Ladies,
You rock. You have given me some good info to go off of.
Thankfully daddy pays CS consistently. He is very concerned about his credit rating.
I will contact my local office and see what happens. I think I will be beyond the resource limit. I would rather get health coverage for her. Daddy pays health insurance so he can write it off and I pay dental and vision.
It is so nice to see familiar names. I will post more with pictures too.
