Okay, so I just posted about speech. Get this, Ryan has a hard time verbalizing. I had him evaluated for braces for down the road (he is 9). His teeth are very crooked. Anyway, they come up with this retainer that has an expander to widen his upper jaw. He goes in every two weeks for an adjustment that is very slight and isn't supposed to cause any discomfort. I think to myself, that's pretty cool - they will kinda straighten up on their own. He got it put in last week. DUH!! His speech is now actually worse and he is DROOLING I need to give it some more time, but I just didn't even think about his speech being effected so much. Ryan's speech is so hard to make out as it is, and I'm just thinking - "Good job, mom, you actually made it WORSE!" What a bummer. Like I said I will give it some more time to see if he can adjust, but I might have to get it removed. Jodi

This is very typical for ANY kid that has jaw or palate expanders placed! It takes quite a while for them to get used to having an apratus in their mouth. His speech might STAY that way the whole time he has it, but it'll go back once it's out. Most of the parents I know who's kids have had them say their child's speech is quite a bit better once they get the equipment off because there is now room for their tongue to move better.
Angela has been evaluated twice, (different orthodontists) but each time we've been told we needed to wait until she lost the last of her baby teeth. She's 11 now, and still has 3 teeth left to go! BUT...we're told when she's ready she'll first need her cross-bite corrected, THEN palate expander, THEN jaw expander, THEN braces if she still needs correction. BLECH!!!!

Sounds like he NEEDS to have his teeth work done too.
More time to adjust and maybe ask the ortho about drooling and speech?
My son is 5 and they're already talking about extensive teeth work. Teeth and mouth structure have a lot to do with speech formation.
I think in the long run it will be worth it! Good Luck, and keep us posted! Dawn

I wonder if it will be good therapy to learn to talk around the thing? I've heard of people improving their diction by talking with marbles under their tongue; maybe it will be like that. Hang in there, I'll bet it gets better Chris too

Not sure this is the same but my sweet Kodi Lee her two front teeth were separated some years back and she had to wear a retainer and her speech that was perfect was not for the first few weeks of wearing the retainer. So I am thinking just give it a little time and my bet is Ryan's speech will be right back to where it was in just a couple of weeks CC ~
