Hi, here I go again with another question. So a million thoughts and questions go through my head, here is the one for today. Do your kids like looking at pictures of themselves? Or pictures of the family of anyone? Can they comprehend what they see? I am sure all kids are different, but it is one of the thoughts I wonder all the time. We take thousands of pictures of Noah and I always wonder will he enjoy looking at these one day Thanks, Jessika

Cassie likes to look at pictures and she LOVES to watch the "photo album" screen saver on our computer. She recognizes herself and her sisters in the more recent pictures but not in the baby pictures.

My Sam recognizes most of the people in his life that he sees frequently although he thinks every baby is his brother Noah. Noah was the only baby he ever really had contact with. Jess

I love to make photo montages, and Angela LOVES LOVES LOVES to watch them over and over again!
Today I finally got access to the pictures from our trip (several hundred of them) and as I was going through editing which ones to use for our next montage she was in a chair next to me. She had to see EVERY picture and tell me what they were about.

Hi Jessika, I always look forward to your questions! You are like our little sister and I for one am so happy to have you in our family I've always had lots of books for Jelani and once I started reading to him (from day one), he became excited to see the pictures on the pages and eventually before he was 1 hewas flipping the pages himself (kinda swatting them over, lol). It took alot longer for him to point at the pictures...but he knew which books he liked most. But books have been his favorite since I can remember and he began turning pages before he said mommy! ;D Now to answer your question, when I showed him photos of himself or family his eyes got really big and he stared at them in wonder. Now he's older and he can name what/who is in the photo...he gets excited when I bring out pictures and he snatches them out of my hand and runs around the room waving them in the air and giggling! ;D

I forgot to mention something...
By age 3 Angela was able to recognize others who have DS. We had a few picture books that included kids with DS along with typical kids. She started pointing to the kids with DS and saying, "Me, me!". About the same time she saw a picture of her friend Hope, who was born just one day earlier at the same hospital and also has DS. Angela pointed to her and said, "me, me!".
That's when I started talking to her about DS. I would respond to her pointing with things like, "You're right Angela. That little girl does look a lot like you. That's because she has Down Syndrome, just like you do! Isn't that cool?"
By 5 she would spot people with DS in public and say, "Like me, right?" And now she names it. "Look mom! That girl has Down Syndrome, same as me!"
When we're at Special Olympics, where there are lots of people with a wide variety of disabilities, she is always drawn to those who have DS. It's quite interesting to watch.

Eric's favorite thing is a photobook I made for him. It has pics of him, our family, his favorite toys, tv shows, movies, and his friends/teachers at school. He loves looking at it.

Brook loves books too. Always packing around a book and pointing at the animals mostly She also LOVES to look in the mirror at herself making silly faces and brushing her hair. She used to have a small hand held mirror she would lug all around but after three got broken w/in a week (Big Foot Dad and Mary) Dad brought home a BIG one and I hung it down low on the wall almost to the floor and I swear, she will sit there for along time just goofing w/ herself. Laughing so hard, it is SO cute She also loves pictures! She will take the picture and give it to the person whom is in the pic. I have some pic's on the wall at work and every time we walk from the office back to the couch/tv she always wants to stop an look at them. She will point out sister and cousin and in Brookie language "say" their name. Kinda like "ter" for sister. If she has a mirror, music, and her books, she is a happy girl

Jennifer loves looking at pictures, especially if they are of her. I scrapbook so there are quite a few photo albums in my house. When Jennifer was younger and I was trying to get her to say her brother's names I made her a photo album of family and of course a few of just Jennifer, for her to carry around the house. She still loves looking at it. She points to her picture and then herself and says " That's me".

Emily has always loved looking at photos. And she especially loves photos of HER!! When she was learning to read, we made lots of little books with photographs and one or two words at the bottom. It helped her learn to recognize all the names of the people she loved, and some simple words that weren't in the books she was reading. She enjoyed the photo books even more!! Sometimes in the mornings when she first wakes up, she'll come and sit in the computer chair and just watch the pics on the screensaver slideshow. Another thing she loves to do is to take a little photo album with her to camp each year. I think it helps her to start conversations with people about her family, etc........and maybe helps her to be away from home for a week when she can look at "us" when she wants.
Jessika- Keep on taking all those pics!! Noah is going to love looking at himself and his family!!

Hannah is obsessed with her photo albums. I am a huge scrapbooker and she has a ton of albums. She loves to look at them and finally understands that they are of her when she was a baby. For a long time she thought the baby was her little brother but finally has the concept she was a baby once.I bet Noah will treasure those pictures one day-so will you.

Damara has always loved photos. She is just starting to be able to name the people and recognize herself. An she has a blast. We have made her several photo books, that she takes with her on car trips or even on the plane...she can look at the same photos over and over again!!!

OH yes, Russell LOVES photographs!!!! We insist they only use real photographs as part of his communication needs at school even (for various reasons). I think all kids (and adults!) love photos don't you think?

Emily at 27 STILL enjoys dragging out her old baby pics and growing up albums. And she enjoys the old VHS tapes we have too. She herself now makes scrapbooks...mostly of her nieces and nephews and her friends...especially her long time best friend who is LD. Her friend Theresa takes tons of pictures and shares or sends them to her. Like most people these days....we are snap happy so she has plenty.
Oddly she has not enjoyed using her OWN camera which is a nice one...but Katie is still working on her to take it with her more places.

Lea, you said something very interesting about children recognizing that others with Ds look like them. Abby has attracted attention since she was extremely young. Others with Ds were very attracted to her. I took her into a restaurant when I was visiting in Oct and a young man's gaze became rivited on her. He was 14, and he just smiled and smiled.
Abby has a book titled It's All About Me. It has a series of her pictures along with her close family. She absolutely loves her book at age 2 1/2. I bet Noah will as well.
