Last summer I applied for a job as a school nurse at our local elementary school. I didn't get it. Since then we had all the stuff going on with both of Mike's parents being in the hospital (fil in ICU on 1st floor, mil in ICU on 2nd floor), and then of course we lost Mike's mom at the end of the summer. Then my knee went out and I was unable to do a lot of walking, spend the next several months with treatments, ultimately had my knee replacement surgery in January. So.........if I had gotten the job last summer, I wouldn't have it now.
So, while I was recuperating from the surgery, I was playing around on the internet, and the school nurse job was open again. I applied for it again, and interviewed. Really was hilarious, I hobbled in to interview using a cane, wearing the only pants that kind of fit (I had lost weight), they were capri pants, and my nice thick white support hose looked great with them. So I interviewed. And received the job.
Today was my 6th day as a school nurse. The school is Pre-K thru 5th grade. 1100 students. Next year the new intermediate school will be open, and my school will have pre-k thru 3rd.
Boy, I have been busy. I saw 50 kids today. Stomach viruses and strep going around. Also 3 kids fell off the monkey bars, no serious injuries. Checking for lice of course.
But I have to say, it is fun. The kids are cute, very polite and well behaved. One little boy in kindergarten cried his eyes out when I told him he had a fever and had to go home. He didn't want to leave his friends, and they were making pictures today.
So it is quite a change from adult ICU, but one I was ready for. I go to work at 7:15, am off at 2:45. Mon-Frid, no weekends, no holidays. NO NIGHT SHIFTS!!!!
Anyway, just thought I would share. I am having fun at work!
