Hi everyone, I am a single parent of a wonderful young man Jonathan who is 25 years old. My sister has recently moved to the McKinney Texas area for her husbands work and is encouraging me to also relocate to be close again and other employment reasons. Can anyone lead me to the right connections to see what type of programs and services are offered. My son currently is in a day program that goes on outings, has a dance troupe and keeps him busy. What about state assistance for medical? My son currently gets medical here in So. Ca. Any help and info would be greatly appreciated. I need help to lead me in the right direction. Thank you in advance

I don't want to scare you - I love living in Texas, but be very careful and make sure you know what will be available. There are medicaid waiver programs in Texas, but the wait list is about 7 years. I have a friend who just moved her adult son from Florida and she is really struggling with finding a day program for him while she waits for med waiver funding. There are other programs where you can put together some specific services (I believe) but they are not comprehensive like a med-waiver and many are income dependent. Some programs are administered by the county, others by the state. The website below will give you more info. Go to this website for info and look under interest lists. www.dads.state.tx.usI'm sure others (especially Jackie) know more about services for adults, I have a 2 year old - but we are already on the wait list. Try waiting for ....12 years! We are still waiting...but Ems name is due to come up after the first of the year. Meanwhile they do have some lesser programs that are quicker to get on...like Texas Home Living ...which helps until your name comes up.
My friends in CA seem to have about the best benefits for adults with disabilities that I have heard of...so think twice before leaving there. I don't really know anything about McKinney...but I do know that no matter how good your benfits are...what really matters is the local providers for services and it really varies all over the state. So I would begin with a visit to what exists there in terms of programs.

I have always wondered about this. Is this something I should apply for now and hope that Lauren will get when she is an adult or do you have to wait until they become an adult?

I was told to get on the list NOW. My son is two and we have been on for several months. I am only on the HCS list, but was told by someone that I should get on the other lists that he is potentially eligible for as well. She works for MHMRA who administers HCS for Harris County and said if your name comes of on any of the lists - they have to explain all the programs to you and then you pick which is most appropriate. I have not had time to work on getting on the other interest lists that apply to us, but do plan on doing this eventually. I'm not so worried about it since he is so young, but would like to know that he has medicaid as a safety net in the future. He used a large portion of his lifetime max on our private insurance when he was born and I worry that anything else major could cause him to lose coverage down the road. PM me if you want me to send you info - I think I have some handouts from a conference I attended.
My younger sister who is in her late 30's is on a med waiver program in Florida and is has really helped get her better services and taken some of the stress off my mother as she gets older. She knows my sister has funding for a group home and a day program when the need arises. That was the only way I knew to ask and get on the wait list so early.
Hope that helps.

Joy...He will get Medicaid automatically when he turns 18 if you apply for it the month before that birthday. You don't have to be on any lists to get at least the minimal SSI which comes with medicaid attached.

I'm glad to hear that - that's a lot of years away and we're old parents who would like to retire before he's an adult so I need a backup plan and he needs to stay healthy.

I am not sure what lists are still around...but my advice is to get on EVERY single one of them. You can always decline when your name comes up. The only two I know about are the CLASS and HCS...not sure how you get on either one of those either...sorry....

Renee Try this link www.dads.state.tx.us/ and look under interest lists. HCS is probably the most important - the place to get on the list is different depending on what county you are in. In Harris County you contact MHMRA. I have notes from a conference on the other lists. I'll try to find later and let you know. I'll also PM my phone number in case you have questions. Joy

Renee, To enroll for CLASS (Community Living Assistance and Support Services) call 1877 438 5658 For MDCP (The Medically Dependent Children Program) is the same number.
HCS (Home and Community-Based Services) is available statewide and for any age, contact your local MRA Center
CBA (Community Based Alternatives) is also available statewide for persons over the age of 21 that have disabilities.
There are sooo many, call 1 800 422 2956 or the referral hotline 211, to request additional info regarding programs and services.
Hope this helps...
