I was wondering if any one has tryed to get SSI for their child. I am going to try to get it for Lexi. But I am not to hopeful. I live in Indiana and if we quailfy Downsyndrome is a automatic yes. There are just so many complications, living arrangements, etc. It is just too bad that they go by what you make and not what you actually get to take home. After health insurance, taxes, and a loan payment half the check is gone. Drop the health insurance and then we make too much for medicaid. It seems like no matter what we do, we are out of luck either way. Sorry I know we arn't in this boat alone, sorry for venting.

We have never applied because it's based on income and well, we've just never come close to qualifying.
Good luck!

Brook gets SSI cuz i'm broke Yes it does suck they go by what your gross income is and not by what you actually get to have after all is said and done. I tell everyone to just try it and see what they say. All they can say is no right. I hope they help you out. Is there any other services for her where you live? Maybe Chris would know.

Ladies you understand that SSI that takes PARENTS income is for $$ but there is a program "Katie Beckett" that is for medical coverage ONLY and is based on the child's income yes?? I believe you have to apply for the full monty and will get denied based on your income BUT when you get denied, tell them you want to apply under the Katie Beckett Program (they should ALL know this name well!) for just the medical portion. Haley has secondary health care that absorbs all of Haley's copays etc... Have you tried for this A. Each year, I do have to sign forms for them to check out her income but since I only have her $$ in a special needs trust that they can't see they always approve her.

Hi, we just applied for SSI since we are both still unemployed and need Health Ins. for her. Well, they say she will be approved and have health coverage by 5/1...I hope so, cuz we have her heart and 4 yr check up 5/2! Anyway...I contacted the State of Texas Health dept AND the governor office to find out about the Katie Beckett Program...they said this is a state program and NOT offered in the State of Texas...BUMMER!!! So, not everyone has this available. But, they will know if they do have it..I understand it is a great program! Good Luck...

I hope you get good news and are approved for SSI. Jelani receives this since birth, I guess my single parent income is so little that we qualify. Just wanted to list the important stuff for you and others so you don't have to look it up... www.socialsecurity.govSSI eligibility: www.socialsecurity.gov/SSIrules/1-800-772-1213

We had to apply for SSI for Lia knowing she would get denied so she could qualify for a waiver for medicaid. The waiver was something SD-if your child was so medically complex that they could be hospitalized then you qualified. On her it was the NG and the broviac. Now she gets medicaid on a waiver through family support. A blessing- that is for sure. nancy

Wondering if they call it something else in Texas - Jackie might now. I'm pretty sure every state has some version of the Katie Beckett program.
One thing that completely irked us when Jason and Brian first moved here and we tried to continue his SSI here in Michigan. Even though I'm not a legal guardian and can't even call the State on Jason's behalf, they still took my income into consideration (and we weren't married either). That just ticked me off!!!

Christopher has never gotten SSI but at 18 he will qualify for it even if he continues to live in our home. They go on the parents income till they are 18 and then it goes on the young adults income no matter where they live. He can still work but I do believe his pay will affect the amount of SSI he would receive which is OK with me as I really would rather Chris have some kind of job if he can KWIM. DS is an automatic yes here in Jersey too for SSI So my guy still has 2 and 1/2 years to go before he can apply. BEST of Luck to you CC ~

You know this SSI thing really stinkes. Like Jelani's mom, I am single too. I am a social worker for our state and while I don't do SSI, I do the other family economic programs. Sometimes, it gets so disheartening to see how some abuse the system to get their grants and benefits. However, I do have a pretty good caseload as many are truly trying to better themselves. But..... We have the Katie Beckett program here too. I was told my love would not qualify. She does still get medicaid and for some reason a $4 per month SSI check started showing up. I have not applied for anything since my ex left. Must he the COLA, Cost of living increase. In other programs we dedect 20% of gross income and give them expense credit for childcare, housing, utilities and some other possibilities. And in looking at resources, we exclude one car, use the accounts and see if any financial resources are one's that can be liquidated or accessible. My ex has a $10,000 fund set aside for Dani's school and his mom buys $50 savings bond. Since I can't get access to them, they don't count. So many rules, regulations and frustrations. I need to contact SSI. I was suppose to be in SSD training this week but cancelled due to a FULL caseload. Like everyone else, if you truly believe you should be entitled to SSI then reapply. Just my two cent's worth. Kim

Oh, don't even get me started on the people who defraud the system and have generations of family on assistance. Makes me SO mad!!!!! If you do get denied you can always appeal. I had to get a laywer for hubby because he got denied. They said everyone does the first time when your an adult. Don't ask me The poor man can barely move. Anyway, it is ALOT of paperwork and you might wonder what the h*ll is all this stuff but if you indeed feel your intitled, just keep trying. If you need any help just let me know. I think I could fill out the papers upsidedown and backwards if need be

In Indiana there is a medical program called Children's Special Health Care Services that is based on income of parents, but the cutoff is 250% of the poverty line. It is much easier to get than Medicaid (cutoff is 150% of poverty line or lower). It covers all things associated with the medical diagnosis that qualified the child (so Ds), as well as all medications regardless of the reason for the meds, and eyes, and maybe dentist (not sure on that - need to get Stevie in again). It covers all therapies that insurance or school won't cover. It's a great program. Sad to say we will probably lose it this September when we have to re-qualify. Even with 6 kids, the poverty line is just too low for us to get under any more. Maybe it's time for more kids
