LOL....I thought she was suggesting you all go out and buy a forklift (which you would then own) to assist with carrying in the HUGE quantities of beer she wanted to buy !!

Jackie ~ I am just wondering, and I really really hope this is OK to ask I know its typical for ones over 21 to have a drink now and then and yes I too have a drink now and then BUT being ones with DS do have cognitive delays even ones that are "high functioning" what is the benefit from drinking alcohol? Even if only one or two?? Honestly I am truly trying very hard to understand? I see it as empty calories and potential for trouble down the road... I really am just trying to see what the benefit is ?? I know I know we ALL want/hope our kids are more typical then not BUT I just don't get why say sharing a soda or tea with her Sis wouldn't do the same thing?? PLEASE know this is in NOOOO way an attack just truly trying to understand? You have posted many times over the years of Em's drinking a few brews now and then... I know you are LOVED here and I am probably MUD here for even ?'ing BUT I am just wondering what is the good part of it all... Chris is only 15, so maybe I am just missing it CC ~

CC this is purely a personal choice...to drink or not. I am not ...nor have I ever advocated for people with DS to drink.
Emily has been raised in an inclusive environment and in HER environment there are people who drink. She handles it responsibily...never having over two. She doesn't drink when she is not with people that care about her. She doesn't drink to get drunk...she enjoys a drink for the same reasons that you do.
I like to think I have raised 4 responsible kids. In our home no alcohol was ever served to anyone under 21...not ever. My other kids never had a problem with underage drinking.
I have posted here more than once that I have concerns that people with ds living on their own and having the freedom to buy their own liquor...whenever...might lead to trouble. But that could also happen with Kodi Lee.
Yes...Emily does drink occasionally. But I feel she drinks very responsibly. The only reason I post about it at all is because I want people to realize that when their kids grow up...a very typical existance is possible.
Every one of our kids is different in their capabilities to handle social situations. So..you will have to be the judge one day to decide if your Chris can handle it.
The first time I ever saw people with DS drinking was in Wichita Kansas at an NDSC.
I figure if these posts offend anyone they will just skip them. Don't know if this answers your question...you have asked me this before.

I don't care at all for alcoholic drinks. I choose to not drink especially now that I take medicines. Before though, when I was much younger, I didn't drink because I didn't like the taste. I have not met very many who have Down syndrome and drink. I think it does come down to personal choice. Sometimes it can be tempting to drink too much. I think it is good teach the young adults what can happen when you drink too much. There is more to it than just trying something they may see in a movie...........Debbie

LAMO!@that EMAIL
Larry has text'd me before:
"someone broke into the house and stole all the beer"
After 38 years undercover, downtown KC...if that man wants to have a beer during the game, he's well deserved it! I rarely drink it, but am fighting the "aging poorly" weight, so can't afford to!
Molly walked into the beer aisle at walmart, pointed at the Michelob and said "daddy", so i KNOW she notices with detail!
I imagine she'll be sharing one with her brothers, watching the cards beat the cubs, and HOPE that she waits till she's 21! (that'll be a first)
Funny thing that just happened today! My Shauna is in Virginia Beach at the Rock 'n' Roll Marathon...super cool race...simutaneously ran with soldiers in Iraq "Operation Rock N Roll" and also contributing to charities. A very big deal...and a forerunner to the Boston Run!
So it starts at 7am...and she ran a 1:50 on the half
And there was beer at the finish line!
BEER? AT 8AM??? among ATHLETES???
Yep...it has a great balance of carbs/calories/hydration...so the marathoners generally pop a cold one a few minutes after they catch their breath! Very Common to help in the recovery!
anyway...off topic, but i found that pretty interesting. I should have been there as a ticket to the marathon which had local bands playing all up and down the beach.....ends with a B-52's Concert tonight.
That girl knows how to party! We're all going to watch her in january do the Walt Disney full marathon...she's hoping to finish, and getting a 26.2 tattoo if she does!
I think champagne will be the order of the morning THAT morning though!
*cheers*
