A: The ability to tell you when one has to go but still needs help with the up/down of pants and still wears diaper b/c of accidents B: Tells you when one has to go and does some of the up/down of pants w/o any help but wears pull ups. Needs someone there to observe/help C: Does everything all by themselves including up/down of pants, wears big girl unders, wipes properly, washes hands and flushes Just kinda wondering

Well, this is sort of hard because in some respects, up to a certain age, I believe "potty trained" is different for each one of our kids .....BUT, push comes to shove, I'd have to say letter C. Paige acheived letter C completely by age 5. Debbie

For my girls, other then "wipes properly and washes hands" I'd say C. You could go YEARS with independence but lack of wiping properly.... trust me.... kids are lazy so wiping properly probably comes when they turn 18! LMAO!!! And washes hands?? Is that without prompting??? Again.... I am thinking 18! HA! Now, if you are talking a child w/DS I don't know how to answer that.... because Russell is not potty trained but can potty on command (constant reminders and prompting and help)... if that makes sense??? He can pull down his pants usually with minimal assistance but needs help pulling up his pants. He can not tell us he needs to go at all in any form of communication nor does he care if his pants are wet. There have been sporadic moments of him going to the bathroom if he has pooped... but it's nothing constant or consistant.... But in my eyes and the eyes of others, Russell is not potty trained. So.... we are just talking semantics at this point??? Why do you ask? A.

A. is really right on that one - we get the wash hands, flush, wipe thing here, but some days there's alot of prompting that goes on with that - Paige did you wash your hands, "yes mommy" or "oops, I forgot".....but I get that w/my typical son too. And wipe properly, wellll on both accounts too......LOL....however, I get what you are saying Jennifer, and I'm still going to stick with letter "C".

Yep.........I'm going with C, but with continual reminders about the hand washing and proper wiping. But no need for pull ups.

I consider letter C as potty trained. Sarah will not poop in the toilet but will stay dry all day if we remember to make her use the potty. She still doesn't initiate but will tell us after the fact. Chris

Why do you ask?
Well i'm looking into preschools for Brooker to go to in Sept. Each one so far has different rules about being trained b/c of the panty changing facilities they offer. I'm just wondering as to what you'all think is "trained". Brook is inbetween A and B. It's awhile before September I know but I live in a small town that has two preschools and need to look around "in the big city"(...LOL) and they all have different rules.

A, nope these are regular preschools, I believe. I had one heck of a time the last few weeks with all of this buisness (I want to say another word that starts w/ a B.... but this is a family board...LOL) It all started when Brooks case manager gave me the run down of where she will be at 3 yr old. No one told me she wouldn't start ECSE preschool at 3 b/c of her birthday. I thought they were picking on her. Finally after alot of wasted time I found out that. I was pissy!! When she turns three in April she won't be going anywhere untill Sept. So thats May June July August with no services except the private ST I found and what we do at home. I was once again pissy and of corse wanted more for my girl. I guess all preschools are on the same schedual as the school districts and have the summer off. Who knew, not me. Mary never went to preschool so I was lost on this. I just hear of all the other little ones going to preschool and thought why not Brookster too. Now I know it's a b-day thing. So I have taken the advice I dish out all to often, and am making this a possitive. I could really use the time off from appt's and evals and all the other stuff. Brook will be going to what ESD calls Speach class untill May and i've asked them to sneek her in for the last couple classes. We'll see. I will take the time off to do fun stuff. Like play w/ the kids and take a few extra classes at OrPTI. Did I tell ya I have 2 more classes and i'll get my certificate Last class is Feb 5th I believe. The ECSE class is two days a week. I was looking for a few more days to throw in their b/c Brook has no "typical" peers to interact with. She needs to learn to share and interact w/ kids. Right now she does ok at Speach class/ school once a month but come'on now, once a month and then once a month at play group. She, so far, is the oldest at group so she just watches Signing Time while I gush over the babies and talk w/ the parents. I just want so much for my Brookster. I need to learn that ESD and ECSE are WAY different than school. Lots of different rules and such. I'll get through it but if I eat one more bag of Oreo's i'm going to explode.... LOL Oh so thats why I was wondering what potty trained is. The preschools have different rules for each school so I need to find one to accomadate Brooker just in case she isn't all the way to C by then....... we keep truckin' along.

Ok, to be honest, I can't get past the first paragraph Jennifer..... they can't tell you she can't start until Sept I do believe. Did you check with your OR Dept of Ed on that??? I think you need to double check that. They can start in April and have ESY even... Russell did!
ALSO, if it's PUBLIC school she does NOT have to potty trained WHAT SO EVER...that's part of having a child w/spec needs and an IEP... if they think for one minute a child w/DS at 3 is potty trained, they are smoking crack! LOL Maybe some are, but I'd say the vast majority are NOT. Private is another beast all together....
Stay positive but I'd be calling my Dept Of Ed ASAP to clarify what your district is telling you. I'm not buying it just yet..... LOL

I called SOOOOO many places in the last weeks A I got confused a bit...LOL. I will call back the Or Dept of Ed tomorrow as they are closed today. I'm becoming buddies w/ the Spec Ed Directer there. First named basis and all. I think he thinks i'm a pest. I'm pretty sure thats what they said. I promise i'll check. It was something to the effect of school is already in session and so we had to wait till the next round. I was so exausted and in such an Oreo cookie coma I just gave up and said whatever!! Grrrr..... Whats the difference btwn a public preschool and a private preschool? Are public preschools in the school building and private schools are located at another location? Ahhhh i'm so confused. I know the schools i did check cost about $100.00 a month. Thats probally private huh? If this is what I get for living in a small town then i'm moving in w/ our son!! Wait till I tell him that..HA!! His sister and his son can go to the same school...LOL Kee on smiling................

If your dept of ed says your daughter can't go to school until the following Fall, ask them politely to direct you to where it says that in your OR and/or IDEA laws They need to back that up! As far as public vs private... if they are telling you it's $100 a month, that sounds private to me. ALL school districts must offer Early Childhood for SPED either in their district or contract to a neighboring district in order to provide FAPE to a child that turns 3 and has an IEP. That would be public. And FAPE doesn't have some "you must be potty trained" provision in it for it And if you get confused when you call them... write it down and/or start emailing someone to get it all in writing We always suggest here that parents email our DESE website instead of calling, because remember, if it isn't written, it was never said A.

I just love you A I found this on their sight. It's clear as mud dontcha think...LOL A-2. Who is considered a preschool-age child? A preschool-age child is one who is below the grade level and age at which the LEA provides elementary education. [34 CFR Section 77.1(c).] For the purposes of Title I, children from birth to the age that the LEA provides a free public elementary education may receive preschool services. [Section 1115(b)(1)(A)(ii), ESEA.] Ok now I got it. That (public) IS the preschool the ESD ECSE offers and she does not need to be potty trained for that one. I know already their rules and yes she will not go untill Sept for safety reasons they say. I'm all down for safety. I guess there are a few older boys in the class and so the teachers will keep Brook and her other little girl friend "O" safe and they will start in September. It will be 2 days a week. Thats fine I spose. Even though *I* want more, Brook will do fine. The schools I called were obviously private and they can have potty training rules. I'm still going to call ODE and get their exact dates for school age. Just so I know in my own head My sister just came over and you know how little sisters can be...LOL. I think i have finally come to my anwser on all this "stuff"...LOL I really need a break. Brook will have a fun filled summer w/ ST on the side. We will play and continue doing "school" at home. In Sept she will join her little friend "O" and start preschool. She will be more grown up and more ready to learn and be more prepared, I hope/think. I know that there will be battles along this journey and I needed to ask myself "Do I really want to start a pissy match right now?" (sister talking) NO, i'd much rather take one day at a time and enjoy my Brookster. She'll get there. Sister, once again says... "It's like you want her to be in college yesterday"...... Uggg sisters LOL I just want whats fair. Fair to Brooker right now is a momma with no headache who wants to color and read books and not have a Oreo overdose Oh and in case you were wondering... I know i'm a pestery want it all booger head but thats just me I'm learning.........LOL
