I had one doctor recommend it for Carter after only a ten minute evaluation. His attitude was might as well just operate. Hmmm...We are getting a second opinion later this month. All the kids in the waiting room had had the surgery and the parents said it's really fast.

Carter had a bilatteral pull down. It was stressful and awful waving bye-bye to him as they carried him away, but of everyone he ws DEFINATELY the least stressed of anyone in this family! He was crawling around that night!

Welcome! I personally had one and the drops and massage along with johnson's baby shampoo with warm water on a washcloth got it going. The opthamolagist specifically said Johnson's, so maybe it has an ingredient in it? Might not hurt to try at any rate!

Hi! We don't have that here, but Carter has ongoing "control issues" AKA - he hates pooping if there is any "form" to it, shall we say, and will hold it until he bursts. This started around 18 months which is aroudn when I was told to take him off orange veggies and fruits because he was eating too many and looked like a carrot. Well, long story short, those are the only veggies he liked at the time and less fiber plus really linking his applesauce and dairy...well, you know!
Until you can get the surgery, if you are having hard time with hard stools, try papaya. I have been telling everyone - it is like the miracle food! Gerber makes a papaya dessert or you can steam and smash your own. THe juice works well, too. Just mix some in what he is drinking or some of the pulp in with other fruit or cereal (it really tastes like nothing if you ask me) and it really, really helps! I heard kiwi is simlilar, but papaya is the bomb!

Not Carter, but I had/have them something awful. I had very invasive sinus surgery and allergies. I have not had problems for years, but it has started coming back. Apparently the surgery only has a 5-6 year "guarentee". Oh the joy. I am very vigilant about the kids because of this. The surgery is, quite honestly, brutal, but I was in there 4 hours and had 3 dozen - yes, that IS true, 3 dozen - polyps removed from my nose and sinuses, reconstructed passageways and a deviated septum repaired. I said I think I have the most expensive nose i know of that looks exactly like it did when they started LOL!

Maybe she is constipated? My little girl can be snarly (no DS) and I remember a similar situation to what you are describing when she was crabby about something.

Carter had it at 18 months. After that they start to need the hormonal funtion of it, so we decided to stop waiting and do it. Good thing becausae that night he pulled up and stood STRAIGHT up for the first time ever - apparently something was pulling in there. Feel like an ass for not doing it sooner, but who knew? He was in surgery for about an hour and 15 minutes and it was the first time he would lay down in bed with me and take a nap LOL! He was doing better that afternoon and by evening he was well enough that I went to school and left him in his father and grandmother's very capable hands and he was fine. In fact he sat on my mom's lap at dinner and ate two cresent rolls, a huge pile of rice and gravy and drank two milks. Next day it was like nothing happened to him.
Be warned, though, it looks HORRID for a couple days - I was not prepared for that! They cut him on each side at his scrotum and also up at like, his bikini line area, for lack of a better term! Also, use the salve they give you (if they give an antibiotic) or vaseline on a gauze square and stick it on each incision at diaper change time. Carter had a big poop and I was so scared to wipe him there, but you have to get it clean, especially over an incision, KWIM? He didn't act like it hurt, but that's when I came up with the gauze idea. MUCH easier on everyone just to peel that back and hae the mess be gone.
Almost a year later, his scrotal scars are totally invisible and have been for months and his higher ones are almost completely gone. I had to tell the new ped he had the surgery done and she was like, I don't see any scars! Not that it's majorly important, but it's like then you shut the door on it like everything is where it should be and it's over, KWIM?

Kim, I know what you are saying and GUILTY as charged! Carter was so small when we went to that doctor and it was all so new, we did whatever we could do to try to make it not affect him as badly. Didn't know any better and even if our heads knew, our hearts said you gotta try it!
Now, I give him antioxidants when I can because well, can't hurt, might help! Carter does make a different protien that i do (learned that later!) and it does make more amonia and free radicals and that can hurt anyone. Hell, if he wants blueberry or red grape juice vs. kool-aid, who am I to complain? I mean, he's 2, he's only gonna go along with it so much, KWIM? But it's good for him and ther eya go. Now I'm about health and prevention of possibly alzheimers which may or may not be a factor with the free rads. It's only smart to try to prevent further damage.
The vitamis did nothign for him. I only gave him the PM formula because the AM had a stimulant in it. He has never been a sit around kind of kid. He's got normal levels of energy and attention, so maybe in his case it was just not necessary? I don't know. everyone is different, Dx or not!

Kathy (and anyone else!)
Just noticed I didn't mention it, but Carter was on those hap caps from 8 weeks old. He was on them until just after he turned 1. We also did the recommended flaxseed oil and soemthing else that I forget the name that was nothing but a very expensive little bottle of liquid that did nothing IMO that you get at the health food store.
Anyhow, what I so now is really work on giving him a high antioxidant diet. He drinks wild blueberry juice (hlaf that, splash of apple and then water is really good and not too strong) and red grape juice. I try to give him soy cheese and chickenless soy nuggest a few times a week instead of regular. Whole grain bread, let him dip in kethcup - that kind of thing. I did a google search of high antioxidant foods and got the top 10 list if you are interested. Laurie will correct me if I am wrong, but antioxidants is what the vitamins are trying to provide - to gobble up the free radicals made by the extra protien being synthesized of the extra arm of the 21st chromo.
Instead of never feeling really "right" aobut the vitamins, I give him a regular miltivitamin and I watch the diet as closely as I can and he seems to do well! You can OD on A,D,E and K vitamin pills or powder a lot sooner than you can drink too much blueberry juice! It's pretty easy and if nothing else, a healthful way of eating!

a little late to this but...We used supplements adn all they did was turn him orange. He has been healthier and continuing on in his development with the same strengths and the same weaknesses since he was on them.

Carter's 2 year one was fine, but he just had to have one last week because soem di at teh child care center of the gym put him down a 15 foot tunnel slide ALONE. He went airborne and landed face first, legs back over the head. This one showed mild instability (I am assuming form the crash). I do know the first ones he was much more controled and on a table and these last ones he was on a chair strapped in trhwoing the mother of all temper screaming hitting fits. Poor kid was hurting. We have to go see a specialist, too, but I am leaning toward it being okay because of the hx. Definately get it checked out again adn get the MRI. I am going to ask for one to make sure, sure SURE and see if I can get one (I am not paying for it, after all)!
