Hopefully you guys will have some idea of what's going on with Ayden. We spent all day yesterday at the Drs office and getting xrays and finally all night in the ER with no answers.
Ayden woke up yesterday very sore in his right leg, so much that he cried all day and couldn't put any weight on his leg. His knee seemed to be bothering him first, so we had that xrayed, which came back "normal" , then it looked like his ankle was swollen and we took him to the er and they said xray was fine, and bloodwork was normal, and it may be a virus that is inflaming his joints, but they want us to follow up with an ortho.
He hasn't had any problems like this before except for one time with his flu shots he looked a little unsteady on his feet, but nothing like this. He can't stand up at all, and he is running a mild fever (100 degrees) and he hasn't had any injuries to his leg either. Anyone ever have this happen before, or even heard of anything like this? I feel so bad for my little guy, and I'm at a loss as to what this could be. Any ideas?(( thanks! ))
UPDATED: Ayden has been called back to the ER because his culture is growing some sort of bacteria, we don't know what yet but he is now spending the night in the hospital getting iv antibiotics, please pray for him , (and me) I had to leave him there with Daddy and take Evan home. We'll know more tomorrow.

Something similar happened to Sarah two years ago. She woke up one morning and screamed when she tried to stand up. She couldn't walk. The doctors were baffled. They ended up doing titers for a ton a viruses. It turned out that she had mono within the past 6-9 weeks. They said the joint soreness was a reactive delay to the mono. I felt terrible becuase I didn't even know she had mono! Kids can have very light cases of certain viruses. In Sarah's case, I remember she was very tired and didin't want to walk. I thought she was just being lazy because she wanted to be carried all the time. My initial thought and fear was leukemia. Of course, that was her pediatrician's first thought, too. I was so relieved to get a diagnosis. She got back to her normal self in a week or so. It was so scary! I just wanted to add that the joint pain was the worst in the morning. It improved as the day went on. I think all we did was put her on motrin for a few days for the inflammation. I posted about this in the fall two years ago if you want to search it. Chris

I haven't been around here in forever, sorry for just jumping in!!! I also jump to leukemia first. We all do, I think. Sometimes the bloodwork takes a couple weeks to show up. The other thing is synovitis (an inflammation of the fluid around the joint) which it sounds like they are going to treat him for.
My good friend Ann, her son John was treated for Synovitis first with IV an oral antibiotics first before one day she took him into the ER AGAIN. That ER doctor...for some reason I can't remember now (and I can't get hold of her to clarify why) ran different bloodwork and promised she would not leave the hospital without an answer. Part of the problem Leukemia causes pain in the hip is because most of the bone marrow is made in the hip, as are the excess white cells which take up too much room making the joint very painful.
I know you are scared. We will all be praying this is synovitis and nothing more. That can easily be treated. It sucks that we all live in fear of Leukemia.

Aww poor Ayden, hope he is doing much better now he is on the antibiotics. We had a similar thing with William about 2 months ago, he could'nt use one leg for about 2 days, it was a total mystery, he had x rays and we visited the dr but no one could say why, even though he was saying that it hurt. after a couple of days he started using it again then a week later it happened again, and then again a week after that so 3 times in total with the same leg. very scary for us and him. He has been fine since then. The only good thing was he was not ill in himself so it wasn't as worrying as it could of been. Bigs Hugs to you and Ayden xxx

We have been moved to a different hospital (Georgetown in DC) for more tests. Ayden has a bone infection and an inflamed ankle joint, they drained the fluid to have it tested for bacteria- no definitive answers yet. : ( He is one 2 strong iv antibiotics, so hopefully I will have good news soon. I am so tired, I'll post more when I have news. Thanks again everyone for your concern and prayers (hugs)

Well, I am sorry to hear that he has a bone infection and is still not doing well, but I'm happy to hear that he CLEARLY has something wrong with his bones and it is NOT Leukemia! Thanks for taking the time to update. Hugs and prayers!
