Emily hasn't been able to see well enough to read since at least August; probably earlier than that but we didn't realize the extent of her vision issues before then. I think that has been the very worst thing about this..........she learned to read at a very early age, and reading is what she did for FUN!! I felt like she had been robbed, when we were told that she was losing her vision...because it would ruin her ability to read.
So........last week, I went to her school to see a demonstration by a guy who works for a company that sells equipment to help kids be able to read. They had all sorts of stuff that magnified letters, changed the colors of the backgrounds, etc.........anything to help kids use their limited vision to read again. We learned that if the letters were at least an inch and a half tall, and they were WHITE on a BLACK background, she could see them!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! You should have seen her face! She was so excited!
The school system is buying 2 different kinds of equipment for her to use at the school. So, I started looking at what we could afford to buy for her to use at home. It is AMAZING how much that stuff costs!!!!! I then went to Ebay and started looking at used equipment. Finally, I was overwhelmed and worried and just went to bed, praying that something would be obvious to me the next day....the right magnifier, the right price, etc.
The next day at noon, I got a text from Emily's vision teacher saying the sales rep who had shown us the equipment had called her and said he wanted to GIVE Emily a hand held magnifier like the ones she had used that day..........all we had to pay for would be shipping charges!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
It won't be a Christmas gift; we'll let her start using it as soon as it gets here. But what a GIFT!!!!!!!!!!!!
