Do your kids have flat feet? I wasn't sure if this was a trait of DS or my daughter got it from a relative but her feet are as flat as you get.
Just wondering.

Amy, funny you should mention it, I took Chase to his dr today to discuss his very flat feet and now his ankles that are caving in also. He gave us a referall to a pediatric ortho guy but seems to think there is nothing that can be done for it. I know otherwise because I have heard several people here talk about special inserts for the shoes that their PT's wrote scripts for, sooooooo, Joyce and who ever else had dealt with that, will you tell me exactly what the inserts are called so I know what I am talking about when we go see this dr, I swear it is even starting to effect his knees and hips also, he seems very stiff. His posture is awful and no matter who I gripe to, no one seems to hear me or they say, that is just the way it is.....but I want to scream NO IT ISN'T, I see very few children with DS and as bad of posture as Chase, but I cant get anyone to give him a script for PT, grrrrrrrrrrrrrrrr. The boy is almost 12, I dont want him hunched over for the rest of his life, sighhhhh hugs, Robin

Robin, Merideth has DAFO's for this. Just go to dafo.com & there's a page listing the applications. They come in different heights. Our PT called the Ped & had him write the script then we took the script to an orthotist at a local race clinic. It was paid for 100% between our insirance & Access.Call if you need help as Mike's cousin is a PT & Meri's original PT used to work in your area so she still has MI connections. Hugs! Suzi

lat feet is VERY common in children with DS (according to the books I've read, and from what I've seen. Rina had arch inserts in her shoes for 2 years (the orthopedist purposely wrote a prescription for a bit big, so they would be good for two years. Now she's off them in the meantime...

By the way Russell walks, I would believe he has flat feet too. Russell has clompy, triangular shaped, FLAT feet LOLOL!!!
Robin, our PT when Russell was little, talked about Russell feet turning in like Chase's. Russell's feet did that and she said to get the inserts... because if not, thier bones can protrude and their feet will form funny... but I never got the inserts. I don't notice it really anymore.. The inserts have different names depending on the height of them (ankle, knee, ect) and who makes them... like DAFO and AFO's ect...
Good luck!

My feet are very flat. I thought I got this because of my dad and grandmother, his mother. I have an arch, my mother says I do, but, it is not much. My feet feel everything I walk on. Sometimes they hurt. My posture is pretty bad too. I am what they call a sway back. I have to work on it all the time! ;D

Yes....flat feet are definitely common in kids with Down syndrome. When Emily was just over a year old, we went to a Ds conference and my husband went to a session by a pediatric orthopedic doc. He talked about the flat feet issue, but also said kids with Ds should never wear orthotics with a built up instep as it would make them feel as if they are walking with a rock in the middle of their shoes. We put that into our "things to remember" mental file. But.....at nearly 2 years old when Em was not walking, she got orthotics! At around 4, she got new ones that were softer and seemed to work so much better......and I'm sure they were much more comfortable and didn't give her that "rock in the shoe" feeling. The orthotist who made those moved, but I'd like to search for someone else who could make her some soft ones. LOL that was the LONG answer........the short one is that flat feet are really common for our kids. Susan

John also has flat feet. We call them froggy feet 'cause his feet go flop flop flop on the hardwood floors. I personally find them endearing- I don't know why carolyn

thanks for the help! I will check into the othopedic inserts for Natalie...she is also starting the point her feel inward (pigeon toed). I think it has something to do with the flat feet. We will go to the doc and see what to do about it.
thanks again!!

I don't know that Joy has flat feet, but she sure does have fat feet. They look like little sausages! They do seem flat, though and I have a terrible time finding shoes that fit right.

Natalie sounds a bit like Courtney...she has had problems with her ankles her whole life...Her ankles used to roll in really bad. She had AFOs that went to the middle of her calves, then they changed them to little inserts for her shoes. She hasn't worn them in awhile...mainly because Courtney likes to wear in style shoes for little girls.....and you can't do that in the summer with inserts! So we have ditched them. She does turn her feet in too. I will take a picture of her ankles tomorrow and let you see what I am talking about. Good Luck! Jenn

Christopher too has flat feet, he has worn the inserts with the supported arch seems like forever and at his last check we discovered he is actually getting a tiny little arch now in his feet
I have no idea if its common in DS, my Dad also had flat feet and had to wear the arch support insert also.
I have a feeling flat feet is common in many, DS or not
