I mentioned a few months ago that my brother and SIL were having a little boy w/DS in November. Well he was actually born this morning. It seems he has some bowel issue (not sure what type of problem exactly). He is 3lb 6 oz and from what I'm told he breathed on his own for a short time. My SIL's water broke on Saturday - she was only 31 weeks. Please everyone pray for them.

Many prayers coming your way....my Eric was born at 31 weeks. He weighed 3lbs-1oz. He was on a respirator for a very short time. He also had some bowel trouble which later turned out to be Hirshsprung Disease.(had surgery at 1yr and seems fine now). These little mighty mites are stronger than you think.. and what fighters..I know how scary this is..sometimes I felt like I could hardly breathe, but with loving support from my family and the hospital staff we got thru. Keep us update on how this little guy is doing Dolly

Well, if I was any good at praying, I'd sure try my best. Sorry, think it'll be better if I just try to send best wishes and positive thoughts. I know firsthand just how scary and stressful this can be. Your nephew was born a bit older and bigger than either of my boys, both 30 weekers and about 2 1/2 lbs. each, 4 years apart. Both, thank God, doctors, nurses, and pure dumb luck, are doing pretty well now. If you had already given your brother Babies with Down Syndrome : a New Parents' Guide, maybe now you'd like to give them also Preemies : The Essential Guide for Parents of Premature Babies. And I think a nice present for Alex James would be a small Whoozit or one of the flatter Beanie Babies, like the platypus. Believe you and your family are in for a few bumps over the next several weeks. It took my Charlie a full 10 weeks to graduate NICU, but he had a couple of surgeries thrown in there. His little brother Robert breezed through NICU (it was still pretty rough on his aging parents) in a mere 6 weeks. We'll send very best wishes that Alex James will have a smooth and as easy as possible course through his NICU days. Please keep us all posted. And please let me know if there's anything I can do to help. -- Bob, dad to preemies Charlie (w/ Ds) and Robert (w/out Ds)
