I agree with Jackie, totally. I am forty five and still in need for education. I just like to learn. I want to learn so much and some times I can't get enough. I took a Women's Writer's class a few years ago at our local junior college here. It was not an academic class but I still gained credit or something like that, for finishing the class and for participating in discussion's although I am shy in a classroom. I don't like the word, retarded either when it is used in a negative way. I was called that name in my childhood and it still resonates with me to this day. I am known as Debbie not the lady who has Down syndrome. Yet, still, Down syndrome is a big part of me. I will never escape that completely. All I can do is be myself. I will work hard to prove that I am seen as a person first and make sure people know that my Down syndrome is not my whole identity. I am not offended by the label, Mentally Retarded. It is what I have besides Down syndrome was named by a man but I am really mentally retarded. I do not mean to offend anyone on here. This is what I have accepted in myself. Psalms 139 is one of my favorite scriptures and I try to read it every day. If he accepts me as I am then I should do that as well.
