On July 5, 2007 My Adan will be undergoing heart surgery to close the defect he currently has in his heart. Adan is 11 months old and we have postponed this surgery with hopes that his defect would resolve itself-it has not. He is expected to be in the hospital for approx. 1-2 weeks after the surgery. I am terrified and I have high blood pressure problems. Please I would like to ask anyone that has went through this for pointers and key questions I should be asking as well as anything I should be watching for. I ask for all your prayers.

Carmen, Your sweet Adan will be in our thoughts and prayers. (and you and your family too) I can't give you any pointers because Eric didn't have any heart surgeries, but he did have a colostomy at 1yr of age. And I was terrified too...but our kids are very strong...fighters! And the docs today are so capable...they can work miracles! I can tell you not to worry, but I know you will...only natural. Please keep us updated to how he is doing. And take care of yourself too.

Carmen, I will be praying for you guys - I know how tough this is!! Ashleigh had open heart surgery when she was 2 to repair an AV canal. The doctor also told us she would be in the hospital for 1 - 2 weeks, but she had her surgery on Friday and came home from the hospital on Monday!! It was amazing!! I truly believe the Lord totally did a miracle for her! Kids bounce back so much faster than adults do!! I pray that the Lord give you guys strength, peace, and the ability to trust Him...and that Adan will have a speedy recovery!!

Hugs to you and little Adan. I will keep you in my thoughts and prayers throughout his surgery and recovery. You'd be surprised at how many babies/toddlers from this site have had heart surgery, and have done BEAUTIFULLY!!! I am POSITIVE that Adan will do very well, and that you'll have the strength to get through the surgery and hospitalization. We'll be thinking about you, Susan

I don't really have any tips for you since Sarah was younger when she had her surgery (on her three month birthday). Our kids generally do amazingly well with heart surgery. If he has been able to go this long without surgery I am sure he will breeze right through it. Just remember to bring things to the hospital that will comfort him like a favorite blanket or a crib mobile if he still uses one. My daughter wasn't really attached to a favorite toy or blanket she just wanted her mommy and daddy.
Relax and know many people will be praying for little Adan.

I haven't had to go through this, but after going through the minor surgeries that Chase has had, I can only begin to imagine the anxiety you must be having over Adan's heart surgery.
Many prayers for you both...

Like some have said, a lot of us have been there... It truly is a leap of faith to put your baby in the surgical teams' hands, but you really don't have a choice, and there is sort of a blessing in that alone. Cole went through surgery for a complete AV Canal at 4 1/2 mos. and he left the hospital after 5 days. It was terrifying, but yet so awesome that our technology today allows our kids to have a second chance at life.
Prayers will be going out to you today, tomorrow, and on the 5th, as well as after, for a speedy and uneventful recovery. Just hang in there, and believe in the doctors; they will do everything they can for beautiful Adan.
Peace to you and your family.

Of course we'll all be saying prayers for Aden and your family!
Nicholas had heart surgery at 21 mos for AV canal defect. For me, the worst part was handing him over before the surgery! Our wait time was about 3 hrs, that was pre-op, surgery, and recovery, then we could see him. Of course there will be all kinds of tubes and IV's and a respirator, but those will quickly come off over the next day or two.
Nicholas was in the toy room playing on day 3, and we were home within the week. Truly amazing how much energy he had and how much better he was breathing after the surgery!!
I do have some pictures, if you would be interested in seeing them. For some people it helps, others it doesn't. And if you have any specific questions, ask away, of PM me!

What kind of heart defect does Adan have? Like the other parents, I know how scary this is. Joshua had his VSD repaired when he was 2 1/2 months old. The doctors and nurses were so nice and treated us all really well. They also gave him medication that kept him comfortable. I was relieved that he didn't seem to experience much pain. Adan will be in my prayers, too. (I also have pics if you want to see them.)
