all i know, is that we got to go visit at gigi's playhouse in Chicago...they had a bookshelf full of books, and a roomfull of children with Down Syndrome...and they all BEE LINED and took ALL the books out IMMEDIATELY! and to the floor they went.
I was one of the first moms over, cuz mine was the pack leader in dumping...when the woman in charged touched my arm and said..."it's ok, you are home"
we let the kids ransack the pile, and made sure they were all picked up when we left...but it sure was nice to be somewhere, where no excuses needed to be made.
molly kate is a 'dumper' and a 'tosser'....and i don't know what to tell you, except not to lose your humor about it. All in all...if this is the worst behaviour she has...we'll just deal with it.
she does understand...and she knows NO!! but sometimes...the urge is just too much!
good luck! let me know when you find the answer!! we're still working on it!

daddy pulled up when molly had done the flop&drop, she was sitting out there on the sidewalk in, with her aide, and no other kids on the playground. It was just by chance that he pulled up when he did....
he whopped her diaper and used his daddy voice (EEK! I KNOW!! AND IN FRONT OF THE TEACHERS!! DOUBLE EEK!!) but she responded well, and we didn't have a problem anymore...or if we did, the teacher would say...
"do i need to go call your daddy?"
i don't spank...but daddy does...very infrequently, and she adores him so much more than me...it just seems to be the final word. I think molly would do anything to keep daddy happy, and visa versa.
me?
oh i just provide the pretzels...*sigh*

davehingsburger.blogspot.comSaturday, April 26, 2008 Two Words Again on a stage, this time in Baltimore, I'm doing the 'luncheon keynote' and I've been asked to talk about Bullying and Teasing. I had a few new stories from my workshop in Simcoe (see the 'hand series' a few days ago) and I sat there looking out over an integrated audience. Most were parents and care providers but several were people with disabilities as well. This should be fun. It was people with disabilities got into what I was saying first and their comments reinforced what I was saying. You can't fool an audience with disabilities. At the end I got a standing ovation. That happens rarely so it was very, very nice. Afterwards I went to the book table and sat with Joe. He sold books and I chatted with people. One man, a grizzled guy with Down Syndrome, made his way to me with a real sense of purpose. He began talking to me. He talked quickly and with great intent. He said something like this... k gddh gdaph gmet There were individual words there, they came quickly, but I didn't understand him. He spoke too rapidly, his words were illformed but their meaning escaped me. I listened harder. I could pick out certain words ... the first I got was 'hurt'. I listened and I knew from his repeat of that word that he was talking about someone hurting someone else. After a few seconds of hard listening, I got the word 'wrong'. He continued to talk and a few more words came clear, they emerged from the haze of sounds and took shape in my mind. His eyes didn't leave mine. I realized that it didn't matter that I understand his every word, he understood his every word. He had something to say, he needed to say it. At the end, when he took a breath, all I said was, "You're right, it's wrong for someone to hurt someone else." "That's right!" he said, clear as a bell. He walked off pleased that he had delivered his speach, pleased that I had affirmed what he had to say. Umm, this guy with Down Syndrome, this guy with difficult speach, this guy understands that hurting people is wrong. Then why is it so hard for the rest of the world. Presidents, Princes and Potentates don't get it. People who have the gift of oratory will speak in defending the need for torture. People with the gift of words will speak of God's love for some not all. People with the gift of words seem to have little use for the only two words this man could say clearly. Hurt. Wrong.

it's gonna be ok...we are in the same place fast forward 9 months.
mike was a customer of mine..him and his caregiver came in twice a week for the 20 years i've been here. He was in his late 40's, in a wheelchair with CP resulting from polio as a child. Although some would dissappear when they saw him coming, i always liked him...his speech was difficult at best, but do-able given a little patience. I did find him to be sharp as a tack..a phrase i find myself using for molly...alot!
He was insistant on john wayne movies in VHS format...something that is just not available, anymore...had it not been for knowing my molly, and her weird obsessions...i prob would have not worried about it...but i did, and offered to find what he wanted on ebay at home.
well a couple years and a gazillion vhs tapes later...any given saturday you could find molly on the floor of mikes apt, in front of the tv, and refusing to leave a cardinals game. mike was a big cards fan...and during these times his mom, darlene and i would have tea...and discuss our little angels..... although generations apart....there is no measurable distance in the age of mommy hearts.
mike died aug 14th of last year...from a stupid infection that occured when they screwed up his cath. a long painful sepsis death. Darlene never left his side...like she knew he wasn't going to recover from this.
i stayed as close as darlene would allow...and fretted constantly about her..she too, had devoted her life to her child. She wouldn't come to thanksgiving dinner...and wouldn't come with us to any of molly's events...
at Christmas she delivered two huge gift bags of presents for molly to the pharmacy..i was so shocked, and blurted out.."oh Darlene...this wasn't necessary!!"
but, for the first time in a long time..i saw her smile..
"mike bought these for molly before he got sick"
she's much better these days...i saw her last week, and saw a new woman. I know the hole in her heart is huge...but she is finally discovering the life of 'darlene'
grief is to be experienced at an individual's pace....just stay close, and let your friend know that you remember...and that you are a phone call away.
im working on a piece of cardinal memerobilia..with mikes name on it. We should never forget their names.
((((((((((((hugs))))))))))))))

the ABR
ugh
we just had one...it is in office-outpatienty with a little bit of nothing for sedation...non invasive
i wish i would have known about the BEHR (?) which is inpatient TOTAL sedation
because molly wouldn't sedate...she dozed but kept moving a little and even blinking an eye can interfere with the reads...
it's ok to get the test..yours will probably do better cuz molly is BIG! almost too big for the dosing they can do..and that kind of testing is the ONLY way to know decisively about any hearing loss
funny story: we have a new EMT here with a 12 year old audiologist. She conducted the first testing..and i asked her if she'd ever worked with kids like molly.
"no"
so they lit up the duck
ms audiologist is not happy cuz molly isn't responding, only moving her hands a little
now excuse me...but if you were in the business of hearing loss...would you NOT know some basic signing?
the movement of hands was molly signing 'more duck'
EEK!! we then got the referral to go to the real doctor in springfield.
now...if we only could find a decent dentist.

i laughed at the phrase too...but have gotten a little used to it, and am thinking it may be a 'southern' thing...as several times i was asked "she is downs, isn't she?" i dunno...much better than when i was asked "and your already pregnant again?" EEK!! these little ole southern ladies will knock your socks off!

are up for the "military mother of the year".. she's got a blog, Life with my special K's" which is phenom, like her. Kennedy (DS) is in remission from AML...and Renee seems to celebrate her children and faith, regardless of any circumstance! Her blogs are always funny and uplifting. I wanna be just like her when i grow up! if you get a chance, i would love to see her get this award...her hubby, frank, was home for the chemo, but reassigned to Afghanistan on the remission. vote here...you do have to sign in...but it's easy and quick! www.cinchouse.com/motherhood_award_entry_detail.asp?ID=1402(hope this works better)

i blogged about it this week....in this last week we've had a tornado, 6 more inches of rain which blew the top off the lakes and rivers (and caused another death) and it SNOWED yesterday and this morning! There has been a 70 degree day in all of that... sheeeze!! PS! here's a link to the flooding pics we took on our drive this weekend...and the spring concert! www.kodakgallery.com/I.jsp?c=ehwz1t2.9dl9fjwm&x=0&h=1&y=-rrw24m&localeid=en_US
