Has he said ANYTHING about helping kids/adults with special needs? Just curious. Have any of you heard anything?
Also, another thought, if McCain is elected, do you think there will be some help? I kinda think there would be SOMETHING after all the talk.
I realize that people say a lot of stuff to get votes. I also think though that there are a lot of people that would push more because somebody cracked a door open (hinting at future help) - I imagine parents and adults will give an extra thrust should McCain/Palin get in - more so than if Obama did. Does that make sense?
Regardless, there has to be more to these people to earn our votes. I will say that, of course, being in my situation, hearing that help might be out there in some form is enticing - but we really should learn a lot more about the candidates and their views before making any decisions.
JMHO...

I really haven't heard him say much about this...I have seen that he co-sponsored a education bill dealing with diagnosing autism, getting services, etc. Which is good! I also know he has voted against outlawing partial-birth abortion, (Born alive Act) while he was a Senator in Illinois. I'm not starting a pro-life, pro-choice discussiion, but it scares the bejeebers out of me to think that this same person may hold the highest office in the world. To me, life isn't cheap...and I worry about my son, and others who aren't so perfect, going into this "changing" world we are being promised. Actually, it makes my stomach sick...

The way to find out how the candidates really feel about people with sp needs is to check their long-term voting records. See how they voted not only this year but perhaps for the last 10 years on these issues this will give you a real idea on how they truly feel. It may surprise you how folks voted or did not vote at all.

I'm not sure "special ed" has been much of a "hot topic" in past years..... You always hear about abortion, war, economy, taxes, and border patrol....but special ed not usually a hot topic..... I think it has only been brought up due to Sarah Palin..... Could be I am wrong......anyone else ?

Okay - so now the real question (don't worry... not expecting an answer... ) How much of this stuff is just plain old rhetoric

I see a lot of "will support Autism education" but what about everyone else. It is impossible to get the things I need for Lauren in school. She is the only child with Down Syndrome. Jodi, I personally think it all comes down to money. Where will it come from and who will get it.

"How much of this stuff is just plain old rhetoric" I think its fair to say BOTH sides are full of "rhetoric" but McCain first thing he will do is put a spending freeze on all for a bit. Seems to me that would include a freeze on anyone with disabilities too I know there is a financial (sp?) crunch out there for lots BUT sorry I don't think a freeze on funding for our kids should be now or any time, they already suffer with lack of funds Sadly this area always seems to be the first to be cut I am in NOOOO way trying to sway you or anyone who to vote for BUT I would like to just say that just because Palin has a son with DS will in NO way mean the funding will be better for our kids. Again as I have said and will repeat if Palin/McCain win or NOT I sure hope in the end she will be the ADVOCATE for our kids she claims to be CC ~

Jodi, I've spent quite a bit of time lately looking at the websites of both candidates, and I know what you're saying is true............how much of any of it is how they truly believe, and how they will govern, and how much of it is what their advisors instructed them to say??? And, since I just recently started really reading those websites, I wonder WHEN all the info about disabilities was added to it? Maybe I'm cynical, but I keep wondering if (after Palin was selected and there has been talk of her making sure that those with special needs will have a friend in the White House) both campaigns added all of the info to their websites.....knowing that a lot of people would be interested in that topic? I don't think it's our fault that we have so many doubts; politicians over the years have helped us to feel that they can't always be trusted to DO exactly what they say they'll do as they are campaigning.
Obama is SUCH a polished public speaker. He makes excellent speeches, and that's great. But, like Steff suggested..........in order to really know any of the candidates, the true test is how they have voted in the past. (And who they have been associated with in the past too?) I don't think I've ever been more concerned about the choice we are making than this election year.

That is it in a nutshell Susan. There are great concerns for me too.

SUSAN!!! Thank you for putting my thoughts into words!!! I was talking with some friends last night about the election. Talk about being cynical. I asked when was the last time someone said "Hey - so and so was a really good president... I'm gonna miss him"? When has a president EVER really did what they promised? I think that for real reform, it would be a painful process for our country. I also think that there is too much influential money at the top to ever allow such reform. So what does this mean for my kid??? Well, I think it is just more of the same. Slow progress...
