Hey, I stumbled over this while web surfing the other day, and one of the links discusses some of the repetetive or somewhat ritualistic behaviors seen in kids and adults with DS. I was thinking of Emily and the videotapes on the bed when I read this. It doesn't sound like her "groove" is the type that would cause a problem.
Anyway, I thought this was also really good information and gives some insight into why our kids may sometimes be seen to be behaving in a way that is "stubborn", when in fact they may be resisting change, or trying to complete a task.

LOL Laura....did you mean to post a URL along with this? I was excited about reading what you read too!! There are really several things that Emily does that are a bit ritualistic or possibly a bit obsessive/compulsive, and I never know when to be concerned about it and when to just say "hey...that's Em"!! One example is that she HATES to eat PopTarts or Pizza or other stuff with her fingers. She prefers to use a fork with all of them!! However.....I keep thinking maybe she got that from me cause for years my favorite lunch was a grilled cheese sandwich and BBQ chips and I ate ALL of it with a fork! (hate to get my fingers dirty, you know???) She also INSISTS on holding a pencil while she watches TV! How strange is that????? When she was younger, whenever we rode in the car, she insisted on carrying a toy plate or toy fork with her. She doesn't DO a thing with it (not like she uses it like a microphone or anything); she just HOLDS it!!! I would give absolutely ANYTHING to get into her head just for one day.
I'd love to read more about this Laura!!

I'd like to see it too. Patrick does this thing where he puts his hands up by his nose and wiggles his fingers~he will do this over and over.
Susan~I think the eating poptarts and pizza with a fork is genetic if you eat grilled cheese and bbq chips with a fork! ;D

Hmmmm LAURA girl, I went to that link and this is what I get "We are sorry, but you are not authorized to see this file" K, girl PLEASE authorize me, I really really would LOVE to read about this. Christopher has always been quite OC but recently it has become in the way of life and we have just started him on meds for this. I am truly stressing over this decision but the Doc is working very closly with us. But at age 11 we are seeing that Behavior Management is not helping enough on the OC and according to this Doc if it truly is OC both are needed Behavior Management and Meds Anywho this is a subject I have LOTS of interest in, sooo LAURA girl, I will be good, Honest Can you approve me to read this link CC ~

Christie, I trust you IMPLICITLY, but I can't authorize you, because I have no authority, LOL! Try accessing it like this: www.chw.org/display/PPF/DocID/2554/router.aspThen scroll down the page to "Behavior" and click on the link about the article regarding repetitive behavior called "The Groove". Goodness, I hope this works. By the way, there are links to lots of other great information on this page - I have bookmarked it.

Cathy, your restraint is UNDERwhelming. ROTFL! I have to make those blonde comments myself before someone else does - consider it a pre-emptive strike!

THANKS LAURA girl the second link you posted WORKED ;D As always LAURA you are right looks like a very good site and I too after reading the article bout "Grooves" bookmarked for further reading THANKS for sharing this girl, I LOVE reading sites like these, sooo full of info We just had Chris to a full evaluaton at a DS clinic by us here and this was really one of the main reasons. As the Doc here explained to me most all with DS have these tendencies BUT when it starts to interfere with life then sometimes meds are needed. Which in our case seems to be true Hmmm now that I have read this article I guess I have to determine what is really Christopher's "Groove" and what is really his OCD Geez life would be sooo much easier if there was just a blood test for this Least for me it would be SUSAN, have to say after reading some of what you mentioned Em likes to do, none of it sounds like it interfers with life. Although can I say to you girl, that I know many people that eat pizza with a fork, doesn't seem odd to me at all BUT eatting a grilled cheese sandwich and chips with a fork, Hmmm girl now that is the FIRST I have heard that LOLOL you silly girl CC ~

Hey - Maggie's got her groove on...has to eat out of the same bowls, the same spoons, the same cups etc. Oatmeal for breakfast, only drinks pear juice and drinkable yogurt, etc. etc. etc. The list could go on forever. We just thought it was Maggie being Maggie. But I guess it's a "groove". Funny! Now about this getting your hands dirty thing...LOL Matthew has NEVER played in the dirt, gotten dirty etc. and for a rough and touble boy, that's different! He used to stand up after falling down and hold out his hands for me to wipe them off first! Now Maggie has followed suit and doesn't like glue, paints etc. getting on her hands. We've been seeing a feeding specialist to get the child to eat finger foods. Do you think it's because she doesn't want to get her hands dirty? LOL Could be! Now does their mother have issues? Of course I do! I have to have tags cut out of my shirts and my socks have to be just so. I think we all have sensory issues that we're attuned to. Different people about different things. Go figure! I was at a field trip for my health class tonight about using animals in therapy. There is an OT here who uses Lamamas, bunnies, dogs, etc. It was too cool. I'm going to look into it for Maggie. I loved it. I'm sure she would. Take care. Robin M

I have never read anything about this before, and I find it really interesting...I don't eat grilled cheese with a fork, and how do you eat chips with a fork ..That is cute. I do have a bad habit of checking and rechecking all the doors and the stove before I go to bed, at least 2-3 times..I have said this before here, I have bi-polar disorder, not on the bad end of the spectrum. It is mild but, I think my checking the doors and stove are more of a paranoid thing. At, least that is what I have been told..So, that is my groove. Kourtney just likes to line things up, not everything everytime, but when she does it has to be perfect. Never thought of that being a "groove".. Thanks for the info. Michele
