Thanks Gals. I know not all people get along, hey that is the way life is but I was so taken back that someone thought I was just trying to out-show people here. Hmmm that almost seems comical to me as Chris is delayed in many areas, now I feel as if I have to explain how delayed he is KWIM?? I try my best and will watch my how I post more careful. CC ~ Oh CC you don't have to explain anything. It does't matter how much he is or isn't delayed. Sharing what our kids can or can't do is not a contest or a one-upmanship, it's the same as sharing all the as you said craziness that we go through with our kids as well. When one makes an accomplishment it's cause for celebration and I for one love to celebrate so please keep sharing with us and don't you dare start censoring yourself! :-) Trisha is pretty low functioning as well but that doesn't stop me from wanting to hear about all the accomplishments others are having and to be honest it gives me hope that one day too I will be sharing the same accomplisments with you guys. :-) So share away and let's do more celebrating!

I can only speak from our experience but I always give copies of evaluations, audiology, vision reports etc. to be placed in her IEP records. For us it has come in handy many times when they say they don't think this or that and I refer them back to the medical documents and they have to admit they "forgot". As for the vision screening all kids in our area get that usually at the beginning of each year (usually in the packet they send home they inform that a vision and here a hearing screening will be done, they exempt Trisha because she is already under a doctor's care for both hearing and vision and they have the reports to go by.

Trisha is in a private school (at school district's expense) She is the only one there that has DS but she fits in so well because of the autism. She has been going there for almost 2 years now and is doing so much better in all areas. They are used to dealing with the autism but the DS throws them at times. I keep reminding them, the DS is not what is being treated. :-)

One place we always had good behavior - planes. I have no idea why? What would they have done in an emergency? Have everyone on the plane burn to death or die of smoke inhalation while they try to reason with a 3-year-old? mb If it was an emergency why on earth would they put them off and not the rest? That confused me a bit, I know you don't mean that it would be ok to put a crying child off in an emergency and leave them and their family at risk. Besides if it were an emergency there would probably be more crying that one child's wouldn't make a difference. If the story was true I think it was handled very poorly and why would the airline give them their money back and free tickets if they thought they were in the right? I've been on planes delayed a lot longer than 15 mins so that wasn't such a terrible length of time to be honest. Heck we've been delayed on the plane for hours and to this day still don't know why. :-) If they let the mom hold the child a few mins they might have solved the problem and if not then they could take proper steps. It's a 3 year old child for pete's sake it's not like you can turn a handle and turn off the crying and if the child was scared or tired or hungry to have some one come over telling you to get your kid under control would just add more stress causing more crying. JMHO

I finally got all the details today. It wasn't Trisha's school that was under police lockdown. It seems after they picked Trisha up at school they go to another school to pick up two other kids. It was the other school that was under police lockdown and they wouldn't let the bus leave and they had to stay there for over 3 hours. It appears a call was sent in that someone at the school had a gun. They searched for over 3 hours but found no gun. She got home at almost 7 pm tired and hungry but otherwise fine. The bus aid and driver said she did real well. She always takes something on the bus as it's over an hour ride for her on a good day so she had something to occupy her. I was so relieved to hear it wasn't her school but it still is scary to think they get caught up in something like that just picking up more kids. She is bussed to a private school at district expense so she is normally on the bus for 1-1/2 hrs daily but to add almost 3 1/2 hrs on top of that I would have been whining! :-) I am just so glad that they didn't find a gun and that everyone other than being scared and detained were none the worse for it. If they find out who called 911 about a gun I sure hope they get the book thrown at them. The school Trisha goes to is an Autism School and the other school was a Developmental School. That explains why the school they were talking about on the news was different. All the calls kept referring to Trisha's school so that is what was so confusing.

Trisha is home! We still don't have all the information as to what took place. The school they showed on the news was not her school so now I"m wondering if this was happening to more than one school at the same time. Very strange. Hope there will be more about it on the late news and I hope the school lets us know what was going on. All I know is that her bus driver said that a call about a child with a gun was received at the school and they were searching for it but didn't find it. That is the same information they had on the news about the other school. So strange.

Trisha is not home from school yet but a school official just came by to tell me that she will be late coming home because there is a police action going on in the area of her school and no one can get in or out. They don't know what is going on only that it's roped off. She said the kids are ok but they just don't know what is going on and how long it will be before they are allowed to leave. I sure would appreciate prayers that everyone stays safe and that they are allowed to leave and come home soon.

Hey Robin ;D WELCOME BACK, Long time no see Chris too is speech Apraxia (sp?) and mild to moderate hearing loss and the ST have used Cued speech with him for quite sometime, part of the "total communication" program. You may have already seen these but just in case you haven't ... www.cuedspeech.org/sub/cued/default.aspand www.cuedspeech.com/whatis.aspI will be totally honest here Chris had done very well with the Cued Speech but I almost think with him we need to pick sign or cued, KWIM?? I know the literature says both can work fine together but for my guy Hmmmm Both together seem to confuse the heck out of him or Maybe they confuse us Hmmmm KWIM. Not sure but for my guy using both I think is not the answer. BUT with all that said, I can honestly say the Cued Speech is amazing. Just my thoughts CC ~ We use sign with Trisha and the speech therapist tried cued speech but found that she would confuse the cued speech with the signing. So we just sign with her. She also has a mild to severe hearing loss.

Daughter home from college: What would you do if you went to a party and someone offered you a beer? Son: I wouldn't drink it. Daughter: What if they said it's o.k. go ahead and have one? Son: I would say no. Daughter: That's good, but what if they really insisted you have one? Son: I guess I would get drunk. Now if you asked a non-ds person/child the same questions you might have gotten the answers you wanted all 3 times but they probably would have gotten drunk too! :-)

My parents never gave up on me, never. They did what you are doing Trisha's Mom. My Mom did most of it because my father worked during the day but when he wasn't working he did that some I am sure on the weekends. I wouldn't be where I am at mentally if it were not for my parents. Keep up the good work! You are doing great! ;D Thank you Debbie, I would love to hear any other suggestions you have that may help me teach Trisha. I really appreciate your input and look forward to learning more so I may help Trisha. :-)

Today I was making signing flashcards for animals and one of the cards was dinosaur well Trisha looked up and said Sarah which is her toy dinosaur from Land Before Time movie. I was so happy to see her connect the picture of a dinosaur to her toy. It may not sound like a lot but for us that is a big step. She loves the flashcards I made one set just has pictures of animals with no names and the other set has the signs for the animasl again with no name. I wanted to make sure she knew the signs so I left the names off on purpose. I just finished the body parts flashcards for signing and I'm working on food flashcards. Right now she is just matching the correct sign to the correct picture and signing and saying the words but later we will use them to play a card game similar to go fish and as a concentration game. Also as she was matching them I had a chance to just listen to her verbalizations and watch her signing so that I could talk with her OT and ST about problems she has. For instance any word the ends with ey comes out as a "s" sound and she has a hard time crossing her wrists to make signs like spider or shrimp. I used up a whole box of laminating sheets on these cards today. Boy am I tired! ;D
