Sorry, I'm going to be pretty flip here so forgive me now!!
I completely agree with you. Why do they have to segregate those with disabilities away from others like themselves? Others they can relate too? It is human nature to be attracted to people like yourself and the same interests. Why to people discriminate?
They don't to this with the poor. How many public housing complexes to do you see or have in your community? Heck...for the most part they have the majority of them lumped in their own housing complex with few exceptions!!! They even build complexes for the poor!!!
Ugh!!! Now you have me going!!!
Good Luck, Connie

Jackie...
Hugs girl!!
For me having to redefine "MY" dreams for Collin to meet what "His" dreams are has been the hardest. He is only 9 and really does have an opinion. I have resigned myself to living his dreams but making sure he has set them high enough...he has to be pushed or he won't do anything.
This may not make since but when I read your post it made me think about these classmates I had and their parents.
In High school I had two classmates that were fairly intelligent (no developmental delays) and college bound. But, do to poor choices of "their" own, their parents now have to deal with finding living arrangements for them. One is in a group home setting and the other lives in an apartment by himself (with supports).
For me I can't imagine what they are going through....sounds sad but I found myself feeling lucky....I've known from the beginning what could be lying ahead for us. For them....they did not have to start dealing with it until their kids where out of high school and in college.
Kind of like why God give us children as babies because he knows if he just handed us teenagers we would not be prepared and we would probably kill them....LOL!!
I don't know if my rambling help or not but please know I am thinking about you and Emily. You two really amaze me and you have know idea how much you two helped me and Michael when Collin was first born!!! You gave us hope and showed us that it was going to be ok!!! It helped Michaels heart heal to know that Emily was in college when Collin was born!!!
Heck...she went to college!!! She will find the right housing and employment fit in time!!!
Hugs, Connie

A.....LOL!!! At least you knew it was a class....I thought she was talking about a DOG and I was sitting here trying to figure out what the acronym PAES stood for "pet assistance extra special" could not figure it out.
Thanks for the help....guess it would have helped if I would have read Steff's post before trying to figure it out!!!

Googsmom...
I like your choice of names except one "Malachai" (I'm going to date myself here but....) it reminds me of the move Children of the Corn. To this day the way they said it in the movie makes my skin crawl.
Good Luck Myria...baby naming is so difficult!!!

Myria,
I really don't have any name suggestions but I too did this for Lauren and have them all printed out for her baby book.
As far as being 3 days old before being named I was just about as bad. Only 1 out of 4 had an name before he got here!! I needed to see what they looked like and made sure they looked like a what I was naming them. It was so bad the doctor told me if I wanted to take my baby home.....I had to name them!!!
I think all my kids look like their names...but, maybe that is just me!! Good Luck

I could use advice too!!! Heck....Collin and Lauren (9 and 7) still come and crawl into bed with me and Michael!! I would enjoy the snuggling more if we had a bigger bed!! A full size bed is not big enough for 4 people Connie

I have to agree with MB....pitch the pull-ups!!
Collin is now 9 and has been night-time trained since he was 5 (except for a couple of accidents when he was sick). I found that Collin stayed dry all night but within abut 1-2 minutes of getting up he had peed all the way through the pull-up and soaked everything. So, I started getting him up 5 minutes early and literally running him to the potty. I only had to run him to the bathroom for a couple of weeks before he owned this skill. We have never looked back!! Make the choice and stick to it!! Good Luck...I really do know it is really difficult!!! Who likes to change wet/nasty clothing!! Yuck!! But, the payoff is worth it!!

We have used Atropine but not on my DS kiddo...his vision is relatively good compared to my second child. If, I remember right we dropped daily for 6 weeks for 5 days then patched over the weekends. It has been so long I really can't remember. We did not have any side effects.
Good Luck!!

Collin is 9 and really was not swimming...he would hang around the sides, float and go under the water but not really swim. We signed him up for Special Olympics swimming and they really worked hard to get him swimming.
The swim program we were involved in was ran like a regular swim practice...all the kids did laps, there was no horsing around. Collin used a float around his stomach (which I was not thrilled with) but this really helped his stroke. He can now swim about 30' with out his and has a beautiful stroke.
In our Special Olympic Games here in Indiana...he came home with 3 silver metals and on participation ribbon (you get those when you hang on the lane markers, tilt your goggles down and wave at your parents...instead of doing your back stroke!!!)
Oh, Collin is currently taking swim lessons at our local school with his sister and rest of his classmates and he loves it!!
