Yup....I've got a thrower ! and she especially loves our second floor landing because it opens onto the first floor foyer below....and.....when items are tossed over the balcony....oo-la-la.....the NOISE is wonderful ( to her!) She is 13 now....and it has decreased a lot.....but when she was young.....anything NOT NAILED down would be thrown !

Hi to new Uno Moms (rookies) and some of the originals ! ( notice I didn't say old !) because when I realize how old all our kids have gotten it reminds me that if they are getting older then we must be as well ...sighhh......yes....I was just 30 when I came here for the first time full of questions about this teeny tiny 4 pound baby I had that refused to gain weight and needed to because she was due for open heart surgery once she hit 10 pounds ...I was terrified about the prospect of that and got so much support, ideas, and love here ! She made it through surgery with flying colors and home in less than a week.....she couldn't make her 10 pound mark, but did it when she was 4 months old and 7 pounds ! She FINALLY hit 10 pounds at the age of 1 !! Walked at the age of 2, and was so stinking cute it was ridiculous !! Around the age of 5 Thanks to THIS forum and one mom in particular (A!) I realized that Erin had a dual dx of DS and Autism......took her for eval.....and yup..... Erin is now 13...will be 14 in February & now goes out of district to a wonderful collaberitave school.....its perfect for her ! about 70 kids in the whole school.....preschool-grade 8....there are 4 kids in her classroom now & she has 1 to1 ratio. She also receives aba at our house 3 afternoons a week. She is technically nonverbal, but I understand most of what she says and signs. I would however LOVE LOVE LOVE to have an actual conversation with her one day ! For us, the autism is much more prevelant than the DS.....she does take Risperdal/Risperidone to help with her behaviors (mostly self injurious) When Erin was almost 3 my husband decided this whole deal ( not just Erin, but responisibility in general) was too much for him and we divorced. He does contribute financially to the kids, but has almost no relationship with them. Erin has 2 brothers as well....the oldest is now a sophmnore at Michigan State ( and we live in Massachusetts:( too far for me !!) and my middle is a sophomore in high school. He also has Type 1 Diabetes and a heart condition due to Rheumatic Fever in 2009. I work full time for an artist (running his office and managing all that entails) and part time as a bookkeeper at night, so busy and exhausted are both pretty accurate ways to describe my days ! Uno got me through a lot of nights chatting late and sharing fears, hopes, and resources. Thanks to all that I have met !! and looking forward to meeting new !! on a side note.....Uno needs a LIKE button ... heehee

TO answer your questions fully......Risperdone/Risperdal is said to have weight gains.....Erin needed a boost anyways....she was way off ( down) on ALL charts....she is 13 now and about the size of a 8 year old. She doesn't look like she's in middle school.....so.....we didn't have a concern about the weight. I called my doc the first week and said "is it my imaginiation that it seems to work already" and she said, SOME kids do see it that quick, not all....I was grateful to see the positive effects that fast ! Curious about your sons behaviors and the choice of meds.....does he behave for you at home ? Is school the only trigger ? I don't have any knowledge of any other meds.....but....I'd research more.....Erin's triggers wasn't work demands, it was sounds, herself, smells...things that can't be controlled.....work demands sound controllable and if you don't have an issue at home.....I'd be more inclined why they are having the issue at school. God knows our kids are smart enough to understand how to get what they want and how far each person in their life can be pushed and will push back.....by that I mean......Erin would get into her flopping routine at school and the teachers would say " we can't make her walk"...period...end of story....."she can't walk down the hall".....RIDICULOS !!of course she could and did with me.....she just knew how to work it so they wouldn't make her......and then for us anyways.....it becomes routine.....she assumes this is what I do.....I flop with teachers....and now we are in a cycle. Expectations are the most important thing....and sometimes kids just CAN'T do something.....Erin couldn't hear a doorbell without kneeling on the ground and forcefully konking her head repeatedly and I couldn't expect her to. BUT she CAN walk down a hall without needing to flop and the teachers needed to expect her to.....every kid is different .....every situation is different.......you know him better than anyone....what do you think he needs ?

Hello ! I haven't been on Uno in years....but....coming back to see ! My daughter is 13 and has been on Risperdal/Risperidone for about 6 years. She has a dual dx of DS and Autism, is non verbal ( though she has come pretty far & I still believe I will have speech one day !) The decision to do Risperdal was so hard.....she was teeny tiny for her age and I felt horrible thinking about "medicating" her.....it was agonizing.....but......the reason I was debating meds was JUST as agonizing.....
Erin was self-injurious, head banging, slapping herself, screaming, doorbells would send her in a melt down, cell phones ringing, I could cry thinking about how bad it was for US.....never mind what it must have felt like for HER !!! It was a lifesaver.....and she truly had a change the first week ! As I said, we are lucky that it still is working, we adjust every year or two based on her weight.....
I am not a mom who rushes to ANY meds....we don't even do cough medicine in my house....but....some kids NEED something ! Good luck ......feel free to ask anything !

Just throwing in my 2 cents on Risperdal......my daughter (dual dx of DS & autism) has been on it for almost 4 years.....it was a miracle for us.....she had severe self-injurous behaviors, head banging, scratching, it was horrific to watch and we were helpless to stop her. It worked from day 1 and continues to be fine. She was teeny tiny when we started it, so we weren't worried about the possibility of weight gain....she has gained some....but....was needed and she is still underweight by standards. Good luck....I know how frustrating, discouraging, and saddening it is to watch our kids suffer like this !

HI....been a long time since I've been here to Uno and this is pretty much the reason I came back !! Erin is also 11 and doesn't have period yet,,,,but also feel it will be any day ! School did implemeent a "pad program"...just to get her used to using a pad, having it, changing it....she did fine with it & it didn't bother her...but that was a fresh, clean pad !! I was also wondering about stopping period.....haven't been to doctor to discuss yet...but.....feel like I want to know all my options. Would love to hear more from others who have already dealt with this. Erin also has dual dx of autism....so.....she is even more delayed in communication, cognitive, etc.....I feel like this is going to be something she just won't be able to grasp !

Hi All ! Been so long that I had to get my password emailed to me ! I've been addicted to Facebook....and see a lot of you there...but....I don't really discuss DS issues....so.....wanted to come back here and say hi, see what's new. who is new, and how all the kids are !! Update ( or intro ) on us..... I'm Allisa, my daughter with DS ( and Autism) is Erin...she just turned 11 ...I found Uno Mas when she was a month old ...so....UnoMas is very much an old friend to us ! We still live in MA, I'm a single mom ( going on 9 years divorced!) Erin has 2 brothers....Connor is 17, Ty is 13 & has Type 1 Diabetes & heart complications due to Rheuematic Fever last year. I work full time, my ex was recently laid off....so....that has sent us into a tail spin with inusrance & decreased child support...... So as seems normal....stress is high here ! Erin goes to a collaberative school out of district. It is a good fit for her....very small....very individual attention. She also gets 4 hours of home service a week where they carry through some of her programs. Because of her autsim she still is mostly nonverbal. She uses a pec prgram now & I hope to have her up & ready for an Ipad & its communication apps in another year or so. She still has a lot of imags to learn as well as behaviors to control ( so I don't worry about her throwing the ipad!) I fear her period is coming any day now ! I fear because pottying isn't 100 % successful ! She is 95 % trained...but....we do still have occasional accidents....and she does need assistance still with wiping. That is about it......I'm gonna go read some posts now & catch up....hope you are all well !! Allisa
