I just did this for my daughter at the end of last year. I was told that if I needed help that I could get someone at the courthouse to help me. Also the court should be appointing a lawyer to your daughter to represent her and he/she should be able to help you. My daughters lawyer was very helpful. I stressed alot about this and it went very smoothly. We did have to pay a fee to file for gaurdianship, I think it was around 150.00 but that was all we had to pay. The lawyer fee was based on my daughters income alone and because she didn't have any we did not have to pay for a lawyer. Hope this helps and good luck!

Courtney just had her hearing test done. Her right ear is about the same normal to mild but her left ear has gotten worse at mild to moderate. She has to go back in 2-3 months and have another test. If the results are the same they are talking about a hearing aid for her. What they do with her is make it into a game. If she hears a tone she drops a toy into the bucket ect. She does great!

Courtney will be turning 18 next month and that has been so hard for me. I am not sure why I am feeling like this but I have been so upset about it. We have to go for a hearing next week for gaurdianship for her. I am told I have to make a statement about her at the hearing and I have no clue what to say. I am just a wreck. We also were told that we have to file for social security and aid for disabled adults for her too. So much to do. I will get through it I am sure, LOL.

Thanks everyone. Some great ideas. Courtney is going to be 17 next month. She is not fully included. She has life skills class first thing in the morning, there they work on reading, math and life skill stuff. She then has gym and art with the regular class. She also has speech and is suppose to be getting OT but we do not have an OT person right now. She is at school until 11:30 then she goes to a program that is not part of the school but a placement of the school. In this program she goes to the store and buys what she wants for lunch and then goes to the center and cooks what she buys. She has a paying job there which is about an hour a week. She volunteers at the library and the thrift store once a week also. The aide that she has had for several years is now employed there and not at school and she is very atached to this person. The aid that she has at school she has had off and on for the past couple of years. Courtney does like her. I am not sure what is going on with her. I am getting so frustrated with trying to get her to school. Thanks everyone for listening and your ideas.

I have been having a hard time getting Courtney to go to school. I drive up to the school and her aide comes out to get Courtney and we cannot get her out of my car. We have had this problem for awhile but she seemed to be doing better at the begining of the year. Now it is everyday that she gives me a hard time. she goes to school in the AM and then in the PM she goes to a program that teaches life skills and community integration. She is very willing to go to the afternoon program, she just doesn't want to go to school. I know what is up with her this week, Her friend from the afternoon program passed away last Friday and she has been having a real hard time with that. He was almost 42 and he had down syndrome. He had a bad heart. He was not suppose to live much past his teen years. Courtney keeps saying I sad, miss him. Well I guess I have rambled into a second issue here, sorry guys. Any ideas on getting her to go to school and helping her to feel better about the loss of her friend would be great. Thanks for listening! Shelley

What great costumes, everyone looks awsome.
Susan, I really like the idea of handing out candy out of the back of your van. Courtney loves to hand out candy but we do not get trick or treaters where we live. I might try that next year. Courtney did not dress up this year, she actually had a dentist appointment on halloween. She doesn't like to go out trick or treating anyway so I figured why not have a dentist appointment.

The school tried to do that with Courtney's OT. I felt like I was being ganged up on. Everyone in the meeting was agreeing with the OT person. What I did was I got a note from her Dr. saying to continue OT 2x a week and she was put right back in the program. Hope thing's work out for you.
