Hello! Maggie was breastfed and she has always had trouble with bowel movements. We started watching what she ate early...no rice ceral only oatmeal...no bananas, apples, cheeses, or other "binding" foods. The doctor suggested to give her pears and/or peaches every day, plus add some pear juice (we use Gerber's 100% pear juice) if she goes too long without a BM. All put together, it worked great. Now at three, she eats oatmeal for breakfast with a little pears or peaches (stage 3) mixed in, pear juice watered down 50% and she eats veggies every day of some sort. Greenbeans, broccoli, etc. If she goes a while between B.M.s, I just give her straight pears juice for a day and it works. We got a Rx for Miralax, which is a non habit forming stool softener for worrisome times. But we haven't had to use it more than two or three times. There are several things that you may want to ask your doctor about. Tummy troubles are one of the things our kids tend to have. The one thing I worried about was Maggie holding her bm in if it got to be painful. So I've always been mindful of that. That can make things worse. Sometimes you just have to keep searching if your "little voice" tells you that something is not quite right. I tend to listen when He talks to me. He has great insight! Take care. Thanks for clearing all that up for me! I'm sure there are other people that may have thought the same thing.
Maggie's had constipation all her life and some other things that have made me think twice that she may have it. But, when we went last year to UVA to get her thyroid panel done, I asked if they could do the celiac's panel too. They said "Oh it's on the same panel and the doc would tell you if he saw anything that was unusual."
I'm afraid that they have no clue what they are talking about. I know Maggie's pediatrician said we'd have to do stool samples to find out if she had Celiac's! I printed info off the internet so he'd know that there was blood work that could be done now.
I have to educate our doctors, even the good ones, so any info I can find out helps all of us.
Thanks. Hope that biopsy is negative.
Oh yeah, I heard that there is a good website for a celiac's diet, but I can't find the name of it. Search Celiac's diet and you'll find several things that may be of help.
We'll be praying for you all!

Aren't there usually other factors that point to Celiac's? Like poor weight gain, trouble digesting food, etc.?
I really don't know much about it, but it seems like there are usually other underlying conditions that go with it.
Hope everything turns out well for you all.

Maggie's had brown/red yucky stuff around her ear, in her hair, everywhere, when she had tubes. Both times it was an ear infection and he rx'd drops. Simple enough.
We don't have that problem now, but it was scary the first time it happened to us! Hope it clears up soon.
Take care

There was a questions on the BB a while back about tolerating heat. You might do a search on that and see what comes up.
Sorry, I can't help you. Maggie chills easily so we have the reversed problem.
My son Matthew got some of those bandana type wraps from walmart that you rinse in water, then put in the fridge. You then place them around the neck or forehead to keep cool. He likes them and says they help. I'm guessing you'd have to be careful putting them around his neck during a game. We keep ours in the cooler and he gets them out while in the dugout.
Take care

There are a lot of things (medical) to check out. Having a good doctor who knows their DS is essential! Thyroid problems, celiac's disease, reflux and heart issues are the top ones I have heard mentioned in the past. I know reflux can be "silent" at times and go undetected even with some GI test series.
There is a good feedign group that may be able to help you on Yahoo groups. It's ...
feeding@yahoogroups.com
They are a great group of people. Fire some questions at them and I'm sure they can help.
We'll be praying for you.

I was gonna guess an infection. I've had plenty of them earlier in life and they hurt like crazy! But the symptoms you decribed hit the nail on the head!
Glad you got it figured out. Tell her to drink lots of water and lay off the pop for a while. I had to quit completely before mine went away.
Take care.

Croup

Oh how familiar this sounds!
Maggie gets the croup every time she even gets a runny nose! We have to start using saline in her nebulizer as soon as possible along with the humidifier which runs 24/7 in her room.
We keep a bottle of Oraped in our fridge as we have to use it several times a year. We tried prednisone, but the oraped seems to work better for Maggie. Don't ask me if or what the difference is. I have not a clue. Steroids are steroids to me.
Sounds like you're doing all the right things to me. One thing I can tell you is that May and October have always been the worst time of the year for Maggie. The doctor finally gave her Rhinocort nasal spray and some allergy meds to ward off the seasonal changes. It does seem to help. You might want to discuss this with your ped if it seems to be following a pattern like allergies would follow.
Oh yeah, we also use mattress encaseings, wash sheets weekly and dust consistently to keep the dust down. Our family has a history to allergies, so we have kept up wiht it in her room for good measure. It works for Maggie.
Good luck!

Unfortunately, I hear a lot of parents talk about this. Does your child have heart issues?
One of the first things the docs told us when Maggie was released from NICU was to keep her home during cold and flu season. She still has an ASD and PDA that have not been repaired, so we have extra stuff to deal with.
Here's a brief list of some of the precautions we take...We get the whole family a flu shot in September, we NEVER take her to church, and from September till May we do not take her anywhere people are going to be gathering in large numbers. Including family outings at Christmas etc. We wash our hands all the time...all therapists who come in wash 1st thing, and we carry that germ-x lotion and use it constantly.
Probably the biggest thing that helps is I stay home with Maggie and her brother is homeschooled. So we don't get a lot of the general bugs that go around anyway. Most people can't do that, so you have to do the best you can.
Every cold or allergy spell that Maggie gets turns into croup and then goes into wheezing very quickly. She's only had pnumonia once that we know of. But none of it is fun.
We have purchased a nebulizer and use it as soon as symptoms begin to show. Even if we just use saline solution to help keep things breaking up, it seems to help.
We also run a humidifier in her room EVERY night. It's a pain in the butt because I have to clean them constantly to keep the mold from building up. My kids are allergic to mold, so I have to worry about that as well. Great huh?
Maggie also uses a nasal spray to help with her allergies and nasal congestion. It really helps. Our ENT suggested it.
Are we going over board? Maybe. But, since Maggie gets as sick as she does as quickly as she does, I can't imagine what life would be like if we didn't.
I hope some of that may help. I know it's a big worry. Maggie is doing better as she gets older. I really hope and pray that once she gets her heart repaired that we won't have to be worried with it all.
We'll be praying for you little man!
Take care.

Hey everyone! I'm still doing Weight Watchers and exercising every day. It's making a big difference. I feel great and now I'm wearing mediums and size 12 jeans! Woo hoo!
I am working hard not to gain weight during the holidays so I can start the year out right. I'm having a cookie or two a day and some chex mix (low fat, homemade) for snack with the guys. That way I don't feel like I'm missing anything. So far so good.
Every body write in and tell us your dieting and exercise goals for 2005. I'd love to hear them.
See ya. Merry Christmas.

Jenifer - Hey! I am doing the point system. I have not tried the new program, but those that are on it seem to like it. Most I know are doing points.
I think points gives you a wider variety of foods to eat. But, if you like a strict regiment and do better that way, the new program could work for you. I'm sure it must "work", or they wouldn't present it.
It looked too strict for me. I have to have my carbs. Atkins ruined me! LOL I love being able to have basically anything, I just have to count those points and keep it under my daily goal. It works for me.
I must say that the exercise seems to be the big difference for me this time. It's been so much easier to lose and keep off as long as I exercise. I'm still working out every day, and today I actually added a half mile of jogging in my my running. Woo hoo! That's the first time that has happened in years. And man can my knees feel it! Ugh!
Hang in there. No mattew which program you choose, I'm sure if you stick with it, you'll lose weight. Find an exercise you really enjoy and stick with it.
You can do it!
