I would have let her have it, too. There is NO excuse for slapping a child like that. NONE. EVER. OK, maybe if she stuck her hand in an open flame and it wasone of those your hand moves faster than your mouth things and you smack her to get her to stop immediately before the words come out, but that was not the case here. I think your sister did nothing wrong. I saw a woman just BEATING her little boy calling him "white boy" (she was asian) target becasue they had just been to the old navy (saw them there, too - mean looking but not hitting him) and he had gotten a new coat and he was really wanting to wear it. He was a little kid, for pity's sake! She went ballistic on him like BIG TIME and everyone just stood there staring. She was like what, you never saw anyone discipline their kid before? One woman said yeah, but not beating him! She started beating him worse! I finally was able to speak and told the checker to call security NOW! Which she did, but I never saw if they caught up to her or not. That was many years ago. I wonder what ever happened ot the poor kid.

I can imagine the hassle! My guy is two and holy cow - you better give him what he wants!
Does he like homemade as well? How about mixing some cooked veggies and meat (leftover form a roast or whatnot) into a jar of fat free gravy? This is how I make leftover stovetop "stew" and it's really good! That is great that he eats all those veggies! I am trying to think of ways you could revamp it into something that 1. he likes and will eat (big important issue!) and 2. you feel good giving him! I bet you could even boil/steam up some additional carrots and such that is found in the stew and add it in to bulk up the veggie content and sorta thin out the soduim/fat concentrtion, KWIM?

You mentioned mashed potatoes and canned stew - you can make mashed potatoes with skim milk and pour in some spray butter that has no fat. Also adding in a dallop of fat free sour cream makes them creamier without the fat/calories. I would try to stay away from canned/prepared things, too. That sodium adds to water retention and high blood pressure - two things to look out for in general, but also contributes to a host of problems in overweight individuals. It adds to kidney problems, secondary problems of diabetes, heart problems and saps energy. I am by no stretch an angel, but those are some fast places to cut back and see results fast!

I was curious - why wouldn't he do lasix on an individual with DS? I don't understand why that would be a problem. Did he say anything more specific?

Carter had that! His was a bilateral and it turns out they were somehow caught up and tuck behid the muscle wall so they would push through - sorta then back out because something was wrapped up. It was not a big deal, though at the time it was, so I know where you're coming from! He slept it off most of the day and was well wnough that there was no reason for me not to go to school that night though I had arranged not to be there. He didn't eat much then that night he got up on my mom's lap and slammed down a huge pile of rice and gravy and three crescent rolls.
My olny adivce having been there - it looks horrid at first but soon goes down. You'll have the circ covered anyway, but I would remember to put vaseline or a little bacetracin on the scars and set a little piece of gauze on those, too. One poop explosion and I regretted not thinking of it beforehand, so thought I would pass that on!

Bob, you are soooo right!
I equate it like this - Carter was roughly 5 times his birth weight at 1 (almost 20 pounds) that would be like his 7 1/2 pound sister weighing over 35 at one year. Puts it in persepctive.

Carter is about 34 inches (hard to measure - he won't stand well when I want him to ) and is 26 1/2 punds at just over 2 years. The kid is all arms and legs with this big melon on top. I think about 35% on a regular chart and 90% on DS. No butt, no gut, just a stick boy. He seems pretty good size to me, but then again I knew him when he was 4 pounds and an inch off the bottom of the growth charts! WHat does not help is my 30 1/2 inch 25 pound one year old daughter. Can I tell you how often I get asked if they are twins? I say no, they're close in age and he was a teeny preemie and she is wanting to be tall like her mama. I don't voulenteer DS info much. I don't want Carter to hear himself being singled out like that.

I am thinking of you! Question EVERYTHING and take NOTHING as the truth until it is proven. We did not have the situation you do, but when Carter was born, it was because the docotr who saw me every week and didn't question the problems I was having finally put on a sonogram and found ZERO fluid in the placenta with NO RUPTURE. I probably had a form of toxemia that he blew right past and that is what nearly killed him. Then they came in right after he was born after we were told he was just small and was going to be fine to tell us a laundry list of things wrong with him, only to find out that the DS was the only right thing - the three surgeries they were threatening were not necessary at all because physically/medically he is fine. A prognosis in an opinion you can take or leave (and I usually leave it!)

Hi! I had a negative AFP, then due to my own problems, was sent for a non stress and level 2 u/s. The level 2 was done literally hours before his birth and it showed nothing. I wish I would have known there was a possibility even a couple hours before so that it coudl have at least been in my mind as a vague possibility instead of ARE YOU KIDDING ME? totally unexpected. WIsh your niece well...we have all been there!

unsweetened applesauce, crackers, toast, you know the drill! Yogurt is actually really good for replacing the good bacteria. I give them the light kind sweetened with splenda when they are sick so the sugar doesn't make it 10x worse. If he will eat plain, power to ya, but mine never would! It really should run it's course, but if it goes too much longer, I would call the ped. As long as you keep an eye on him to make sure he isn't drying out, he should be okay!

I researched a ton of stuff and in the end, we try to give Carter a diet high in antioxidants and a variety of foods. We had him on vitamins for over a year and he is the same with and without them, so no big shake there, but I think from what I have seen that antioxidants are a potentially big help for our kids. Fact of the matter is they have that extra chromosome making protien and the process gives off free radicals so it would seem they have more of those buggers floating around. We incorporate it into his diet (and his sisters and our own - why not?) and you don't notice after a while that your yogurt has ground flax seeds in it! I don't think the kids know it comes any other way! Another thing I started is brewing a big pot of decaf green tea, then using that to mix juice concentrate with. I end up with 3 quarts out of one can of frozen juice, so it's dilluted, it has a lot of green tea in it and it doesn't need to be sweetened. I call it juicy tea and the kids think it's fabulous. There's lots of ways to work things in that are no big deal to do. If you want any other suggestions, let me know!
