I'm a teacher and Sarah and I are on Spring Break, too. She keeps asking about going to school. I keep telling her we are on vacation but she isn't very happy about it. She also thrives on a schedule. She loves knowing where she is going to be and what she is going to eat for lunch. When I tell her no, there is no school today, then she keeps begging for me to take her to church. My husband teaches in a college. Sure wish they had their Spring Break this week instead of in March. Oh well! I am like you and crave some unstructured time. Of course, my time is extremely structured at school so when I have some time off, I want to do whatever whenever the mood hits. Enjoy the rest of your vacation! Chris

Poor Lauren! I have no advice. Sarah can get very defensive when she goes to the doctor. We never know if she will be cooperative or try to fight for her life. She has developed breast buds this year. Her doctor said girls usually start their period about 18 months after they start to develop breast buds. I am very scared. I will pray for your girl. It must be so upsetting for her. Chris

ARGH! This is an ignorant and arrogant woman. How dare she compare a person with Down syndrome to a disease! It makes me sick to think that 92% of women with a prenatal diagnosis of Ds choose too abort. Honestly, I believe that many of those women abort because of the grim outlook they have been given by their OB or geneticist. We knew Sarah had Ds when I was 18 weeks pregnant (suspected it at 16 weeks). The geneticist gave us three options and the order of those options were: 1. Termination, 2. Adoption, 3. Raise the child. She gave us every horrifying statistic imaginable. What if everyone was given statistics of all the things that could possibly go wrong with their typical child? Grrrr........

Poor Emily! I wonder if she was too upset to call or text you so they did it for her. I don't know what I would do. Yes, the homeowner's insurance will pay for the repairs but they may have a hefty deductible. I know ours is $1,500.
Sorry, Jackie, I have no words of wisdom. You have given Emily so much independence so I guess you really shouldn't feel it is your responsibility to pay the deductible. I hope that makes sense.

Renee, If it makes you feel any better, there are many moms of twelve year old girls who feel exactly like you do. I think it has more to do with the hormone rollercoaster than Ds. Hugs to you. I know it isn't easy. Chris

My daughter, Sarah, is 10 and is getting an IPad 2 for Christmas. I would like to put some apps on it before she gets it. Her speech is very delayed so something for communication would be helpful. Any suggestions for favorite apps?
Thanks!
Chris

A year ago last August my daughter, Sarah's behavior kept getting worse and worse. She was hitting, spitting, pushing, screaming, scratching, kicking and biting. She has always been defensive when we go to doctor appointments but she was getting violent more frequently. We tried every behavior modification technique we could think of. Rewards didn't have any meaning to her either. Out of desperation, we decided to try meds. She has been using Intuniv since the beginning of August and we have our old Sarah back! ;D She is so much happier and has not injured anyone since school has started. She hasn't had a single bad report from school this year. That is quite an improvement over the daily reports we got last year. Her physiatrist felt like it was the sudden change in behavior was associated with the start of puberty.
Hang in there and hopefully you will find a solution. Anyway, I am just thrilled because Sarah is a much happier child.

My daughter has had so many medical procedures and she is very, very defensive when she has them done. Screaming is common but I must say she is also very polite and never forgets to say thank you. I think it may be her way of telling them not to take the screaming personally. She just gets so scared.
