Back to the original message.........I really liked this presentation and decided to share it with our special needs support group only to be bashed by one of the members. It seems that she felt the author indicated the fish needed to be in a special ed classroom and this woman was livid. Oh well, so much for sharing.

That was awesome indeed! I wish every principal would start the teachers meeting at the beginning of the school year showing this video!

Wow! Thanks for all the replies! You ladies are so wise. I do believe the goals the OT set for Sarah are reasonable. Susan, you have such a calm manner! I am going to keep my original plan for the summer and work on potty training (put her in panties) and get her out of the crib. She is perfectly happy in her crib but I am afraid we have to push her to grow up. Laura ~ Sarah is showing readiness signs for potty training. She always picks the same spot to poop and is extremely irritated if anyone notices what she is doing. She can also pull down her pants and strip the rest of her clothing with ease. A couple of months ago, she pulled that Ethan poop thing and I felt that was definately a sign that she is ready to potty train. The OT's evaluation was for her Community Mental Health Person Centered Plan. It was completely separate from the school district. The good news is that I requested some equipment and they will probably pay for it. I needed a larger stroller and some type of chair for feeding since she has outgrown a baby stroller and high chair. Again, thank you all for the words of wisdom. Chris

you get an evaluation from a therapist and you are shocked at the report? How subjective are these tests? We just had Sarah's Person Centered Plan meeting and the OT submitted a report that only had her at the 8-20 month level. Boy, did that ever hit me in the gut. I know her fine and gross motor skills are very delayed but I believe that she is much further ahead cognitively. The OT kept saying that Sarah was like a 20 month old and we shouldn't expect her to potty train because not many 20 month old kids are ready. BTW, Sarah is 4 1/2. Her ST did an some testing a couple of months ago BUT she had Sarah functioning at a much higher level although her speech is extremely delayed. Her receptive language is much higher and she can sign at least 100 words (probably a very conservative estimate, she knows almost all the signs on all 13 Signing Time dvds). I see my daughter as very smart. Most people who know her always comment on how smart or clever she is. I really like this OT but I am afraid she doesn't see the potential in my daughter. I guess I am still shook up about the report. I haven't slept well in two nights because of it. I was just wanting you opinions. Chris

I use sheet straps on Sarah's bed to keep her from pulling her sheets off several times a day. It works like a charm although it hasn't solved her sleep issues.

I have to agree with CC, I think it is more about the low muscle tone and lack of stamina than laziness. Not only do we need a stroller because Sarah isn't able to walk long distances (but is improving slowly but surely) but she has no awareness of danger. She is impulsive and will just go after whatever catches her attention. All of our children are different. If you believe in your gut that your child is lazy, then push them to walk. I simply am not able to carry Sarah anymore. She is 40 lbs and my back feels every ounce.

He looks so proud of himself!
Hmmm.....as far as sitting correctly........if you are sitting with him, encourage him to sit correctly but most likely he will do it his way when your not right beside him. My daughter used to drive the PT nuts by doing the chinese splits to get into a sitting position. We worked and worked with her to show her the correct way but she would still do it Sarah style.

I second Valerie's suggestion of using the Signing Time dvds!!! I can't say enough wonderful things about them. They are worth every penny. If you aren't able to buy the dvds, you may be able to check them out at your public library. Signing Time is also on many of the PBS stations.

I think he will do a valium type drug in the office. Sarah used something similar to this when she had her last echocardiogram. It is a liquid that they put in their nose. It made her act like she was very drunk which was both funny and scary. It is not very long acting so it is only good for quick procedures. If Justin needs extensive work done, he would have to be hospitalized.

This is for Justinsmom. We go to a pediatric dentist who specializes in kids with special needs. His name is Jason Golnick and he and his father have a practice in Taylor. I think they have a second office in Oakland county.

Sarah just started playing on a special needs team. She had her first game last week and I had to miss it! She is the youngest and smallest on her team. She sure looks cute in her uniform.

I think signing helps the child get the words out. I think Joshua may need it when he starts to formulate sentences. I don't think signing will hinder his language development at all.

Jessie,
It is never too early to start signing. Your family will LOVE signing time!!! I have learned most of my signs by watching the dvds with Sarah. My husband has learned all of the signs he knows from watching the dvds. We own all the dvds that signing time has produced. They are wonderful!
