Although we didn't discover Sarah's heart defect during an ultrasound, she did have a thickened nuchal fold. I did opt for an amnio and when we found she had Ds I had a fetal echocardiogram done that revealed her heart defect.
I had lots of extra amniotic fluid and was told it was common if the baby had a chromosomal abnormality or an organ defect.
I'll pray for your friend.

Jenifer,
I am sure Joy's name perfectly describes her. If she were my little girl, I would let everyone know her name is Joy and that is what she is.........pure joy. I'm sorry your husband's heart hurt so badly. It just shows how much he loves his little girl. I wish we could all be together to share our wonderful children because I am sure we would all be charmed by your delightful little girl.

Does anyone know of a good website or article that explains why the word "retarded" is offensive and suggests better terms to describe mental retardation?

What a priceless Christmas gift! I am going to copy your idea and do the same thing for my family. I can't wait to see all the tears and smiles on their faces when they watch it.

It stinks when your pediatrician doesn't take care of your child. My advice is to pick up the referral from your pediatrician and hand deliver it to the OT. I wish I had better advice but have found doing things in person has a bigger and faster impact.
Do you have a social worker or service coordinator? If not, you should. I have one through community health. Although mine has a ton of caseloads, she always goes above and beyond to help.

On one site, I saw a bumper sticker that read ~
My kid has more chromosomes than yours!

Sarah was a tiny infant because of her heart. After recovering from heart surgery, she grew like a weed and hasn't stopped. She will be 5 in September and is 41 inches tall and 42 pounds. She towers over the other kids with Ds who are close to her age.

Where is the cabin? I am assuming it is up north somewhere. Michigan really is a beautiful state. My FIL lives on Mackinac Island and we love going there in the summer. We are going for Father's Day weekend. I can't wait!

We are huge Wiggles fans at my house. Sarah especially loves the "little" Wiggles (the Wiggles as children). There is one episode where they have a pie making machine that will produce pies when you say "wow". This is Sarah's absolute favorite and she stands in front of the tv saying wow. It is too cute!

Catherine,
What a beautiful boy! You did a fantastic job on the montage. I will take this opportunity to pass it along and educate more people about the value of every life.
