I have to put in my vacation requests at work by the end of the week so is the plan still to meet at Cedar Point the weekend of June 25, 26, & 27? My older girls are so excited about going to Cedar Point and meeting everybody and doing the rides and pools!!! Not sure if DH is going to make the trip, but shhhh, don't tell him, but I'll probably enjoy myself more if he doesn't!!!! Also, I'm also going to request off Labor Day weekend and try to make that gathering too! How many more days til I can put some faces with the names?!?!?! Barb

Will be talking this over with DH. looks to be about an 8.5hr trip. Not too thrilled to do that long of a trip with 3 kids by myself so we'll see what he thinks! I've done that long of a trip before so it's a definite possibility!!!

Googs is just adorable!!!
Both of my older girls had to have Fraenectomies. Caitlin (17) procedure was a bit more unpleasant because they didn't have the laser at the time but once she realized it was open-season for jello, pudding, baby bananas and ice cream she was happy! Sarah had the laser procedure done about a year ago in preparation for braces ( which have yet to go on because she still has 5 baby teeth!) and what a difference! We were in and out same day..... with about 2 or 3 days she was eating pretty much everything in sight!
Any procedure is unnerving, but our experience with the laser route was pretty uneventful!

Caitlin had the series of shots last fall, she did get the sore arm and with last one developed a bit of a rash and itching. Doc wasn't concerned though???
Sarah who is 11 hasn't had the shots yet, simply because when she was last at the peds, they were not giving them but were referring girls to either the county health clinics or to the good old GYN. Figured I wouldn't take her in to the GYN since at this point in her little life she still thinks boys are "icky"...... I'll be revisiting the subject with the Peds when she goes in again for her next visit over the summer.
I know there has been much talk about just how long the immunization provides coverage since it is still relatively new..... will be interesting to see if it is determined whether gals will need additional boosters during their lifetimes.
Although Alison is still little, I do plan on her getting the series. Like others have said, she may well be taken advantage of by some dirtball or another and I want her to be every bit as protected as her sisters are!

Sorry to take so long to update on this...........
Alison is now in a Spica cast ( goes from just under her armpits all the way to her ankles ). In theory, this will allow her ligaments to tighten around her hip joints and hold the head of the femur in proper position. She'll be in this for 4 - 6 months ( 5 weeks down so far ). I just pray that this works because the alternative is extensive surgery to tighten those ligaments up. The scary part is that her DR said he has seen kids go through the surgery only to be back in the same boat a year or two later! Alison never ceases to amaze me though. She is such a little trooper!!! She had her DR, one of the nurses and I cracking up the night she was kept in the hospital. The DR was there talking to me when the nurse came in for the umpteenth time check vitals.... Alison VERY politely said "no thank you. Alison all done. Mommy's turn!" Needless to say after we stopped laughing it was my turn.... the only way she would cooperate from that point on was if I had my BP and temp checked first! She has said "all done pink bandaid. OFF!!!" a couple of times but when I tell her "No, DR says it needs to stay on" she gives this HUGE sigh and says "okie okie Mommy". Such the little drama queen already! Other than those few times she's been really good about the cast. She scoots all around on her blly dragging herself where ever she "needs" to go. Took a couple of weeks but finally got a wheelchair that would accommodate her widespread legs ( for those of you who know me, I could sit very comfortably in the first one that was sent over BUT Alison did NOT fit in it!!!! Shows ya just how widespread they've got her!) so we're finally able to get out and about a bit. The hardest thing for her is not being able to go to school. Her DR insisted that she get services at home and not go to school. UGH!!! Just when I thought I had gotton the perfect situation in place for school too! The school says that there will be a place for her whenever she is able to go back to school and I'm fairly certain they'll keep their word as they have really gone out of their way to set up a schedule with her therapists and SEIT teacher that works well for her. Plus won't hurt that I'm the President of the Parent Association and chairperson for the annual auction!!!
Other than this bump in the road, Alison is doing incredibly well. Her speach is improving almost daily, she's trying to write some letters and has learned quite a few sight words. I know we'll have a rough time once this cast is off getting her legs strengthened and getting her back walking but she'll be off and running before I know it!!!
Thanks for thinking of us!!!

Thanks Bob...... that was one of the first articles I read...........
Like Charlie, Alison's one side is worse than the other. Alison was also on the later side when it came to walking, she didn't start until she was 39 months old..... best Mother's Day gift I've ever gotton I must say!!!!
Thanks for the info. It's off to Rochester we go in the morning to see what the ortho dept out there has to say..........

Any body else out there dealing with this??? Today we had Alison to see Orthopedics because several people ( me, Daddy, PT, etc) had been noticing this kind of "thunk"ing feeling at times in Alison's lips, mostly on the right side. Well, turns out that her hip socket is not normal and because her ligaments are soooo lax the head of her femur is just sliding all around within the hip socket. Not quite officially dislocating, but pretty darn close. The doc wants to put her in a body cast for 3-6 months!!!! Hope is that the ligaments will "train" themselves to tighten up and hold the head of the femur in the correct position thru her entire range of motion. If this doesn't work, then the next course of action would be to go in and surgically tighten up those ligaments. I am just blown away by this right now. I've already called & set up an appt for a 2nd opinion at Strong Memorial in Rochester NY for next week but kind of figure they'll say pretty close to the same thing after reading stuff out there on the net. Alison is soooo going to hate this if we do have to cast her......... she might have taken her sweet time in learning to walk but watch out the girl is unstoppable now!!!!
Just wondering if any of ya some first or even 2nd hand experience in this.......

Alison also has reflux and tends to "throw up" frequently too. Her teacher and therapist would tell me everyday that she "threw up" after adaptive phys ed or after snack time. I asked them was "throw up" or was it more like a liquid burp. Eventually they stopped asking everyday and now just will report to me if it is something very out of what's ordinary for her.
Alison also takes Synthroid. She gets 15mg Prevacid first thing in the morning - 7am or so. I have her school give her her Synthroid at 10am ( about an hour before snacktime). According to her endocrinologist that spacing is okay and doesn't lead to problems between the 2 meds. She also takes another 15mg Prevacid at bedtime. I know that when Alison first started taking the Prevacid she was taking it in a liquid form and for whatever reason that made the "throwing up" even worse! We have since changed to the Solutabs and the problem has gotton much better.
Hope you find the solution to all those annoying phone calls!!!

Sorry to hear Chris & Russell are feeling icky!
And yup CC, been there, done that with the vomiting through both nose and mouth!!! Alison in particular will do that. It's even happened to me a couple of times....... NOT fun!!!
The reason it will sometimes come out the nose too, is because with enough force, it can go up through the whole nasopharyngeal opening and then back out through the nasal passages. Doesn't happen to us here too often, but I now know to watch out for signs of sinus infections for a week or so afterwards. Both Alison & I ended up with nasty sinus infections after a bout of one of those lovely stomach bugs last spring!
Hope the guys are both feeling much better real soon!

Supposed to follow the guidelines? LOL, A.... I don't think I've followed a guideline or a rule most of my life, as I'm sure many a nun could tell ya beginning with Sr. Inocencia who I had in Kindy!!!! Ya know I gave our ped a copy of that guideline list forever ago..... probably at Alison's first ever office visit...... and I gotta love the man, he checks it EVERY single time we're there........ Only problem is I think he's one of those who once he does the test the first time it's recommended he just keeps ordering them with each visit!!! Guess I better get off the stick and double check when and how often some of this stuff is recommended. While she's still little it's not much blood there taking but geesh, before long she'll need to go to the Red Cross to have them draw off a pint to do all the blood work on!!!

Don't know if Alison's ped is just a little on the overly cautious side as far as a number of the screenings go or not. Since she turned 2, he has ordered a CBC & the Celiac screen every 6 months along with her thyroid studies. She does have thyroid problems ( hypothyroidism ) so those tests would be done anyway but all the other stuff has been well with in normal limits each time. I thought that Celiac screening was recommended at 3 yrs old as kind of a routine thing for kids w/DS.... not sure where I got that idea though........

CC
I had major sinus surgery about 5 years ago and I have to tell you it was the best decision I have made in a long, long time! Before having it done, I was getting sinus infections, bronchitis, and/or strep about one a month! I think I had been given virtually every antibiotic known to modern medicine and was still never able to really knock the infections out! Finally my PCP wrote me a referral to an ENT after being on 4 different antibiotics and just getting sicker and sicker! The ENT had me get an MRI of the sinuses which showed major chronic sinusitis that had resulted in thinning of the bones of the sinus cavities especially the maxillary sinuses ( the ones behind your cheekbones), large cysts and polyps in the sinuses and nasal cavities. The surgery took about 3 1/2 hrs and he removed all of the polyps, a cyst in one of the maxillary sinuses, and fixed my deviated septum ( I must have been born with it cuz best as I can remember I never broke my nose!) - an extensive roto-rooter job as he called it! I will say that the first day or so was pretty painful, mostly because he was not able to do all of the surgery through my nose but had to go in through the inside of my upper lip. The only problem that I had was later that night when I was given a couple of tylenol with codeine and proceeded to have a big time allergic reaction to the codeine! Can you say major hives, shortness of breath, itching!!! It was the first and only time I've ever taken anything with codeine! Since having the surgery I've only had one sinus infection and no strep throats! Since then the ENT has also had me taking Allegra & Singulair for allergies that he felt really contributed to the mess in my sinuses. Obviously, only you and Colin can decide on whether or not this might be worth trying if it can help Chris but I thought I would share my own experiences with you.
Good luck with this new antibiotic, I really hope it does the trick for Chris, poor guy has been through enough with this already!

Becky,
Hope you feel better soon!!!
My 2 older girls went to the docs today and they BOTH have walking pneumonia and ear infections! As a precaution he also put Alison on antibiotics especially after her bout of pneumonia last month. I ended up calling my doc to try to get on something as a precaution too ( I've had pneumonia 3 times in the last year and half) but still waiting to hear back from him. Looks like I won't get much sleep tonight with having to give the girls nebulizer treatments every 4 hours!!!
Take care and get well soon!
